CU men's basketball wins 97-71 over Cumberland By David Gerhart Campbellsville, KY - The Tigers had five of their eight players reach double figures and seven of the eight individuals scored at least five points en route to a 97-71 victory over Cumberland University on Thursday night inside the Powell Athletic Center. Jalen Coates led all scorers with 21 points and her recorded seven assists for the Tigers (20-9, 5-8 Mid-South Conference), which was more the entire Phoenix (11-16, 4-9 MSC) squad who recorded five. Andrew Smith also reached the 20-point mark with 20 points and he recorded his sixth double-double of the season with 15 rebounds. Jacob King tied his career-high with 13 points and was one off his career-best in assists with six. Over the two games against Cumberland this season, Campbellsville held an 81-48 edge on the glass after the Tigers outrebounded the Phoenix 40-27 on Thursday night. The two teams battled back-and-forth to start and had seven lead changes in the first seven minutes of the game, while also seeing the score tied three times. After Campbellsville trailed 14-11 with 14:28 left in the first half, the Tigers went on a 16-3 run to grab a 27-17 edge with 8:35 left before the half. Campbellsville never looked back and led the rest of the night. The Tigers extended their lead to as many 20 points in the first half after a three-pointer from Shawn Johnson with 1:08 left in the first half. After four-straight from the Phoenix to closeout the period, Campbellsville took a 53-37 advantage into the half. Both teams shot lights out in the first half with Cumberland making 16-of-27 shots and the Tigers going 20-for-36 from the floor. However, the Phoenix missed all three of their three-point tries, while Campbellsville was 6-for-10 from deep. The Tigers continued to run away from Cumberland in the second half as they led by at least 20 points for the final 12:37 of regulation. The Phoenix pulled within 14 points after the first bucket of the half, but seven-straight points from Campbellsville doused any comeback attempt from Cumberland. With 6:35 left in the game, the Tigers took their largest lead of the night at 85-56. Campbellsville kept the game out of reach and picked up a 97-71 victory over the Phoenix. The 97 points from the Tigers marked just the second time during conference play they broke the 90-point benchmark and also set a new team-high in conference action this season. After suffering its worst loss in a conference game under head coach Brent Vernon last time out against No. 3 University of Pikeville, 87-66, Campbellsville bounced back with its largest margin of victory in a conference game under Vernon with the 26-point win. With the victory, the Tigers move one game back of No. 9 Lindsey Wilson College for the fifth-seed in the Mid-South Conference Tournament after the Blue Raiders suffered a 72-65 loss to No. 11 Georgetown College. Campbellsville and Lindsey Wilson faceoff on Saturday to wrap-up the regular season. Pikeville has won the regular-season conference championship outright and locked up the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament following its 99-93 victory over No. 21 Life University on Thursday night. Tipoff in the Battle of Highway 55 on Saturday afternoon is set for 4pmET from the Powell Athletic Center with Campbellsville hosting Lindsey Wilson for Senior Day and the regular-season finale.
