Elections 1898-1899: Political upheaval in Roley - Jim

How free land out west created a political tsunami in the Roley community

By JIM

(Excerpted from a newsletter written by Milburn "M.V." Wolford and published in the February 26, 1958 edition of the Adair County News.) There are a lot of historical events that have happened on Casey Creek and many things are interesting to think about, for instance in 1898 and 1899 when free land was being opened up in the Okla. Ter. I have heard the precinct workers for both parties discuss how the Roley Community had 28 voters who left for Okla. and all were Democrats, but in turn we had 23 or 24 voters who moved in from Jackson Co. and Laurel Co. and Rockcastle Co., and all of them were Republicans, changing the picture of the precinct quite a lot. Of course that was when there was only two voting precincts north of Green River, one between Roley and Knifley, the other at Pellyton.
