The Jessica: it will fund endowment for LWC women's golf By Chris Wells, LWC Sports Information Director COLUMBIA, KY - A $25,000 gift from Earl & Marlene Smith will endow a new scholarship fund for Lindsey Wilson College women's golfers. The gift is in honor of the Smith's daughter Jessica, who tragically passed away in an automobile accident on October 2, 2016. Jessica Smith played three seasons for the Lindsey Wilson women's golf program, graduating in 2010. The Jessica Smith Endowed Scholarship - affectingly called "The Jessica" - will benefit a women's golf student-athlete beginning with the 2018-19 academic year. "We are so honored to have been Jessica's parents," Earl & Marlene Smith said. "We think the scholarship fund, in turn, honors Jessica in a way that she deserves." "I am beyond moved by the generosity of the Smith family with this endowed scholarship in honor of Jessica," Lindsey Wilson golf coach Eric Wyrick said. "While I may not have had the opportunity to coach Jessica, I know what an impact she made on this program while she played here." Jessica Smith was a two-time NAIA All-American (2008, 2010) while playing at Lindsey Wilson. She concluded her collegiate golfing career with a 78.9 scoring average - second best in LWC women's golf history. She won six individual tournaments while helping Lindsey Wilson win 20 team titles, including three conference championships. Smith was the 2009-10 Mid-South Conference Player of the Year and the 2008 NAIA Region XI Player of the Year. She earned all-tournament honors at the 2010 NAIA National Championship. "This scholarship will change the lives of those that are awarded it -- helping fulfill their dreams of playing collegiate golf," Wyrick said.
