KSP investigating death of man who died while in police custody

By Trooper Jeff Gregory, Public Information Officer
Kentucky State Police Post 4, Elizabethtown, KY

ELIZABETHTOWN, KY – (Thu 4 Jan 2018) On January 2, 2018, at approximately 2:39amET, the Elizabethtown Police Department received a 911 call from the 200 block of College Avenue.

The caller stated that someone was attempting to break into the back door of a residence. Responding officers found a male subject behind the residence who was later identified as Charles Yankey (37) of Elizabethtown.

Although it was very cold outside at the time of the call, Yankey was not wearing any shoes and was only wearing light clothing.

Mr. Yankey also appeared to be very confused and disoriented. Officers escorted him to their cruisers without incident.

At this time, Mr. Yankey stated that he wanted to sit in the back of the car because he was cold. Yankey sat down in the back of a police cruiser and shortly afterwards slumped over.

Officers discovered that Yankey had stopped breathing and began CPR.

Hardin Co. EMS was immediately notified and transported Yankey to Hardin Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

A short time later, Yankey was transported to Louisville for a medical exam which is currently pending final results.

The investigation is currently ongoing by the Kentucky State Police.
