LWC Volleyball captures MSC Tournament title

LWC still perfect for the season, now 28-0, with sweep of Campbellsville for conference title, automatic bid to NAIA National Tournament final site in Sioux City, Iowa.

BOWLING GREEN, KY - (Fri 10 Nov 2017) - The Lindsey Wilson volleyball team captured the program's third-consecutive and fifth overall Mid-South Conference Tournament championship on Friday with a 3-0 sweep of Campbellsville (Ky.) at South Warren High School.

With the victory, Lindsey Wilson secures the conference's automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament later this month. LWC also captured the MSC Tournament crown in 2011, 2012, 2015 and 2016. It also marks the third-consecutive season Lindsey Wilson has collected both the regular season and tournament conference titles.

The top-seeded and top-ranked Blue Raiders (28-0) collected their 27th sweep in 28 matches this season after downing the third-seeded and No. 24-ranked Tigers (26-8) 25-17, 25-14 and 25-12.

Lindsey Wilson hit just .259 overall on the night, but held the Tigers to a -.047 mark, the second time this season LWC has held Campbellsville to a negative hitting percentage in a match. The Blue Raiders also accomplished that feat in the contest in Columbia on Sept. 19.

Part of the reason for the Tiger struggles was the Blue Raider frontline, which racked up double-digit blocks on the night with 10. Grace Blomstedt alone accounted for eight blocks, two solo and six block assists. The eight blocks are the most by any Blue Raider in a match this season as she topped her own team record of seven. Paulina Sobolewska and Carolynne Silva also each added a solo block.

Offensively, Sobolewska led the attack with 13 kills, followed by fellow MSC First Team selection Yeniffer Ramirez with 10. Blomstedt added eight on the night while Elly Burke added points with a pair of service aces to go along with six kills.

The first set was tight through the early goings as LWC held a slight 10-8 advantage through 18 points played. But then the Blue Raiders rolled off a 10-1 run, capped off by a Sobolewska kill to make it 20-9. Lindsey Wilson had a little trouble closing out the frame as the Tigers went on an 8-4 run, fighting off a pair of set points, but then Ramirez closed the door with a kill.

In the second set, Campbellsville led 4-3 before the Blue Raiders scored five straight and 10 of the next 13 overall to take a 13-7 lead. Another strong run in the middle of the frame put the Blue Raiders up 21-10, and LWC closed out the set with a 3-0 run to take a 2-0 match lead.

The Blue Raiders were dominant in the final set early. With a 2-1 lead, Lindsey Wilson won 10-consecutive points to make it 12-1 and then captured four of the next five points to lead 16-2.

The two teams traded points from there until a Lexie Hamrick kill set up match point, and a Ramirez and Blomstedt block sealed the deal for LWC as the Blue Raiders secure the title.

Julia Fonseca and Annija Abolina posted six kills each in the loss for the Tigers.

The NAIA National Tournament begins on Saturday, November 18, at various Opening Round sites across the NAIA. Lindsey Wilson -- based on its national ranking -- will earn an automatic bid to the final site in Sioux City, Iowa. That tournament begins on November 28 and runs through December 2. The NAIA selection show announces the qualifying teams and Opening Round locations will be released on Monday, November 13, 2017 at 10amCT.
