Sena M. Schaeffer: Advice for cat with the unwanted hat

Fortunately - The cat herself performed the extrication - or as as yet unidentified Cat Good Samaritan righted the situation. In any case, this neighborhood feral cat showed up for a routine meal some 12 hours after running away during our rescue efforts.

Sena M Schaefer writes:
This from a vet's wife, a former farm girl, so it's not the first time that I have seen this. You may never catch her by grabbing her. If you can get a live animal trap big enough to catch her, put a very smelly fish flavored cat food in it. By now, she is hungry so she will go for the smell. She is getting adequate air for breath. What she isn't getting is food & water. If & when you catch her, you are free to try to remove it by greasing her hair with vaseline. I would NOT recommend that you do that, however, since it is rough on the humans who will get clawed. My advice is to take the caged cat to a vet & let them do it. We would put the animal under light anesthesia & then remove the "headgear." I have a catch cage that I use to catch raccoons and possums that like to eat my cats' food. You are welcome to borrow it. --Sena M Schaefer
Thanks, Sena Schaeffer - So happy to learn the reasoning behind the advice to call a vet, first. Makes sense, and an excellent option for most. - EW
