(29 Sep 2017) - The Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) has opened a new exhibit at the Kentucky Military History Museum, 125 E. Main Street, Frankfort, KY, that focuses on military weapons innovator and former KHS director George M. Chinn. "George M. Chinn: Sights Set on Innovation" tells Chinn's story from his early childhood in Frankfort, when he showed an innate mechanical aptitude, through a military career that made him one of the most-sought-after military weapons innovators in the United States. As a member of the U.S. Marine Corps in the 1940s and 1950s, Chinn led the compilation of a five-volume history of the machine gun and its development that established his expertise in the field. Staff at the Marine Corps Museum and later at the Smithsonian turned to him to put together collections that showed the evolution of weapons technology. When the Smithsonian did not develop a new museum for the collection, Chinn, as director, was able to bring more than 300 pieces to KHS. The new exhibit features nearly 100 of them. The exhibit is located in the Kentucky Military History Museum's newly dedicated Maj. Gen. Richard Frymire and Mrs. Phyllis Frymire Gallery, which honors their exemplary service, leadership and generosity. While Gov. Wendell Ford's adjutant general, Gen. Frymire oversaw the opening of the Kentucky Military History Museum in 1973. He later served as president of the Kentucky Historical Society and of the Kentucky Historical Society Foundation. Regular exhibit hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 9amCT/10amET to 4pmCT/5pmET. Admission to the Kentucky Military Museum includes exhibits at the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History, the Martin F. Schmidt Research Library and a guided tour of the Old State Capitol. Support from Gen. Richard and Phyllis Frymire, the Kentucky Veterans Program Trust Fund and the Kentucky Department of Military Affairs has made "George M. Chinn: Sights Set on Innovation" possible. The Kentucky Historical Society, an agency of the Kentucky Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet, was established in 1836 and is committed to helping people understand, cherish and share Kentucky's history. KHS is fully accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. For more information about KHS and its programs, visit history.ky.gov. This story was posted on 2017-10-01 05:41:02
