Just a Squirrel, but Westlie was King/(Queen?) of the Road

A Squirrel encounter of the unforgettable kind

By Linda & Ed Waggener

It seemed the squirrel reached speeds of rabbit, but of course his kind are incapable of that. But the small creature captured our attention as it crossed the road in front of us as we slowed to let it go into the grass along the shoulder of the road.

It never did that. Instead, it would race a distance then come to a stop. It must have done that dozens of times along the 2-3 tenths of a mile we followed it. The car seemed to be moving fast enough on the country lane, a bit over 10 mph, and we wondered what the top speed of a squirrel might be.

A quick perusal of wiki/Fastest_animals in Wikipedia had no mention of squrrels.

But another web page , speedofanimals.com/animals/squirrel did reveal the species' top speed: 12.4 mph, and this one may have reached that.

Andthere was a Googled confirmation that most Squirrel Watchers know: These are a smart kind. They are listed in The Ten Smartest Animals, right up there in the same list as octopi and crows. The Ten Smartest Animals stories cited a squirrel's ability to deceive, but it also said that they are able to perceive the intentions of others. Maybe Westlie put on the extended show for us because she/he knew we meant him/her no harm.

We wondered if the few times we made eye contact meant there was a bond, that he'd recognize us if we met again, a reunion we certainly anticipate anxiously. As we passed Westlie by and watched in the rear-view mirror, we saw that the show continued, and wondered how far its range might be. - EW

It seemed the squirrel reached speeds of rabbit, but of course his kind is incapable of that. But the small creature captured our attention as it crossed the road in front of us as we slowed to let it go into the grass along the shoulder of the road . . . For a very few minutes, the squirrel entertained as few other animals can, and prompted questions and caused us to look for a few answers in the accompanying story. - EW/LW
