Bernice Burton Cowan, Adair County, KY (1928-2017)

She was the matriarch of a very large, highly regarded Adair County, KY, family. She was the daughter of the late Tim & Mary Jane Burton. Her husband of 72 years, Calvin Cowan, survives. She leaves 35 direct and five step living descendants. She was a member of Beawallow United Methodist Church. She had worked at Union Underwear in Campbellsville, KY; Adair Memorial Hospital, Westlake Regional Hospital, Fair Oaks Nursing Home in Jamestown, KY, and at Adair County Regional Jail for over 20 years.

Bernice Burton Cowan age 88 years of Columbia, KY passed away Tuesday, September 12, 2017, at 10:20amCT, at her home.

Funeral service will be Friday, September 15, 2017, at 1pmCT, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, 210 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY, with Rev. Clifton Cowan & Rev. Lewis Burton the officiating clergy. Interment will be in Bearwallow Cemetery, 6030 Liberty Road, Columbia, KY. Visitation will be after 3:30pmCT, Thursday, September 14, 2017, at the funeral home.



Pallbearers: Randy Carter, Johnny Carter, Scotty Carter, Wayne Carter, Danny Jessie and Brian Miller.

She was born on September 16, 1928 in Adair County, KY, she was the daughter of the late Tim & Mary Jane Burton. She died Tuesday, September 12, 2017, in Columbia, Adair County, KY, at the age of 88 years, 11 months, and 27 days.

She was preceded in death by one brother & four sisters, Charles Burton, Lucille Burton, Loeta Redmon, Madeline Grider & infant Betty Jean Burton

She is survived by her husband of 72 years Calvin Cowan, of Columbia, KY, and the following:
  • One son: Ronnie Cowan & his fiancee' Rhonda Akin of Columbia, KY

  • Four daughters: Dean (Donnie) Jessie, Kay Carter, Beverly Miller, and Teresa (Terry) Rowe, all of Columbia, KY

  • One brother: Randall (Judy) Burton of Columbia, KY

  • Two sisters: Phyllis (Donnie) Shirley of Columbia, KY; and Joyce Alberta Rodgers of Taylorsville, IN

  • Sister-in-law: Peggy Burton of Columbia, KY

  • Eleven grandchildren: Randy (Kathy) Carter, Tammy (Shane) Morrison, Danny (Krishana) Jessie, Johnny (Rita) Carter, Scotty (Kim) Carter; Wayne Carter, Sandra McCloud, Tasha (Jon) Harden, Brian (Janella) Miller, LeAnna (Josh) Franklin & Keri Rowe and her fiance' Chase Richard.

  • One step-grandson

  • Seventeen great grandchildren

  • Four step-grandchildren

  • Two great great grandchildren

  • Several nieces, nephews & a host of other relatives & friends
Bernice was a member of Beawallow United Methodist Church. She had worked at Union Underwear in Campbellsville, KY; Adair Memorial Hospital, Westlake Regional Hospital, Fair Oaks Nursing Home in Jamestown, KY, and at Adair County Regional Jail for over 20 years.
