Lowering speed limits in New Columbia might be first change If area is made truly safe, a number of actions need to happen, now, including lower speed limits, better lighting, better striping/marking - and, city/county cooperation. Comments re article 90988 Billy Joe Fudge Road work needed on Hwy 61 in New Columbia By Victoria Pike Personal commentary For all it is worth, I have spoken with Conley Moren, engineer at District 8 office of the Kentucky Transportation Department in Somerset, about the need for changes to make for safer travel in this area. In our last conversation we discussed the possibility of lower speed limits in this area which are now 55 mph. This requires a traffic survey to see how fast folks are traveling. I was told one would be conducted but have not heard back as to whether it was completed and the data analyzed to see if any changes were possible. Great to see all the development in our area, but with that will have to come some changes in speed limits, lighting, and safe entrance and exit from these new businesses. I urge our city and county to work toward these goals now before these developments are completely finished to avoid unnecessary problems in the future. Lighting of the area near the stop light in front of Walmart would be a great improvement. This is fairly expensive with the city responsible for the cost of laying the electrical lines. After that you have to get approval from the state to place lights on state right of way. Then actual placing of poles by RECC. Then the city would pay a monthly fee for each light. The time is now to get moving on these changes. --Victoria Pike This story was posted on 2017-06-09 12:52:08
