Alzheimer's talk at CU free, open to public By Joan C. McKinney, coordinating director, Office of University Communications CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY - Do you want to learn more about Alzheimer's dementia? Campbellsville University's Department of Psychology will host Dr. Ben Mast, associate professor and vice chair of the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at the University of Louisville, who will speak on Alzheimer's dementia from 5pm until 7pmET Tuesday, April 25 at Campbellsville Baptist Church, 530 N. Central Ave., Campbellsville, Ky. Mast is a licensed clinical psychologist and a board certified clinical geropsychologist. His talk is titled "Responding to Dementia: Alzheimer's and Caring." The event is free and open to the public. Mast will speak about the spiritual dimensions of the illness. His emphasis will be on seeing dementia through the lens of scripture and of being able to provide compassionate care not only for Alzheimer's patients, but their caregivers as well. His presentation will address ways faith communities and churches can care for individuals and families affected by dementia. In addition to his position at University of Louisville, Mast is an elder a Sojourn Church in Louisville. Dr. Eric Bruns, professor of psychology at Campbellsville University, said, "Mast's personal experience in his family ignited a passion to learn all he could. His ability and compassion in therapy has been strengthened from a clinical perspective, and it has deepened his faith walk as well." Mast is the author of "Second Forgetting: Remembering the Power of the Gospel During Alzheimer's Disease." He is president-elect of the Society for Clinical Geropsychology and the co-editor in chief of the "American Psychological Association Handbook of Clinical Geropsychology."
