By Billy Joe Fudge

That massive seed pod is from a Kentucky Coffee Tree which is Kentucky's State Heritage Tree.

The following is a link to a publication by a good friend and former workmate at Kentucky Division of Forestry:

Kentucky Champion Tree Program: Our State Heritage, Kentucky Coffee Tree

Just a note, I normally don't sanction the planting of medium to large sized trees as close to buildings as this KCT is growing to our City Hall and did not in this case.

The building against which it grows is an addition to City Hall, which came along after it was planted according to my memory.

It's not a banana peel - What is this seed pod?

2017-04-21 - City Hall, by Official Snowball Shrub Weather Prognosticator bush, 116 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, Columbiamagazine.com(c) .
Pods like the one above were seen all along the sidewalk beside City Hall last evening, Thu 20 Apr 2017. At first glance they look very much like dried banana peels. But they are not. And as far as could be determined the pods are not broadcast from any plant in the City Hall landscape. (Failed to look UP. It's on the corner of the building, as Billy Joe Fudge points out in the accompanying article.) After studying the obvious question, "How many four-leaf clovers can be found here?" we hope some expert will give us the answer. - EW
