LWC Baseball to face William Carey in three-game series

By Matt Wurzburger

The No. 6-ranked Lindsey Wilson baseball team continues its season with a weekend road series against No. 23-ranked William Carey (MS) this Saturday and Sunday, February 11 and 12, 2017. .

The series was originally scheduled for Friday and Saturday at William Carey's Milton Wheeler Field, but damages to the campus by a tornado on January 21, 2017, forced the relocation of the series to Jones County Junior College's Community Bank Park, Lakeview Dr., Ellisville, Mississippi.

The three-game set now begins on Saturday and concludes on Sunday. Saturday features a doubleheader with game one beginning at 1pmCT. Sunday's finale is scheduled for 12pmCT.

William Carey (2-2) is the fourth-straight nationally-ranked team to appear on the Blue Raiders' (0-3) schedule. Lindsey Wilson began its season last weekend at the NAIA Southeastern Challenge in Montgomery, KY.

Lindsey Wilson went winless at the Southeastern Challenge, falling to No. 12-ranked Saint Thomas (FL), No. 2-ranked and host Faulkner (Ala.) and No. 4-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan.

The Blue Raiders managed just two hits - singles by Alec Salcedo and Antonio Dorado - in its 13-1 loss to Saint Thomas last Friday.

In that game, the Bobcats tallied 21 hits and scored runs in six different innings, including five in the eighth inning.

Lindsey Wilson held an early lead in its second game of the day against Faulkner, only to lose 12-9.

The Blue Raiders scored seven runs in the top of the second inning to take a 7-5 lead into the third inning, but the Eagles responded with five runs in the bottom of the third to retake the lead for good.

LWC out-hit Faulkner, 14-9, in that game. Salcedo collected three more hits from the leadoff spot while driving home a run.

Dorado scored a Blue Raider season-high three runs against Faulkner.

The next day, Lindsey Wilson fell 13-4 to Tennessee Wesleyan. The Blue Raiders did not score until the seventh inning, when they plated two runs to make the score 6-2. Lindsey Wilson scored twice more in the bottom of the eighth to draw to within three runs. However, six Bulldog runs in the top of the ninth inning shut the door on any potential comeback.

William Carey split four games at the season-opening WCU Invitational Tournament last Thursday through Saturday.

The Crusaders handed Cumberland (Tenn.) a 16-6 defeat in seven innings to kick off the tournament on Thursday. Larson Barkurn drove in a game-high six runs for William Carey in that game, and three batters scored three runs apiece for the Crusaders.

On Friday, William Carey scored once in the bottom of the eighth to break a 3-3 tie in its 4-3 victory over Shawnee State (Ohio).

William Carey concluded the tournament with back-to-back losses to No. 9-ranked Missouri Baptist and Cumberland on Saturday.

Missouri Baptist limited the Crusaders to just five hits in a 16-0, seven-inning defeat.

The Crusaders ended the day with a 9-7 loss to Cumberland. The Phoenix scored eight runs in innings three through five in that game.

Lindsey Wilson and William Carey have played five times since 2013 with the Blue Raiders holding a 4-1 series advantage. The series last convened in 2014, when LWC swept a road doubleheader.
