Poetry by Robert Stone: Shaped but not set free

Shaped but not set free: a sonnet
for the birthday of Lisa Comperry, 31 Dec 2016
In this my former home the pieces seem
almost but not the same as once they were,
some lost and some forgotten, some but dream
first-rate advisor taught me to defer.

In this my current house the fragments lay
in wait with infinite forbearance calm,
some soft and some sharp-edged, some work, some play,
and each approaching deadline gives me qualm.

In this my future place mosaic chips
are fitting image that will stop escape,
some tried and tossed, some permanent firm grips,
at last conforming to determined shape.

In these adventures arching over me
both storm and peace have formed but not set free.
~ Robert Stone, 31 December 2016
