Philip Glenn Cravens, 69, Greenwood, IN (1947-2016) He had a huge heart and definitive character. He was a strong man who expressed emotion and who loved whole heartedly. He was a true "Cravens" who was not afraid to express his love with hugs and kisses or verbally say "I love you" or "I'm so proud of you" even if in the middle of a crowded room. He was a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War, an Airborne Ranger who earned two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star. He was a hero to his family as well as to our nation. He furthered his higher education in 1969 when he attended Lindsey Wilson College in Columbia, Kentucky. . . His death brings sadness to a host of Kentucky kin who remember him as an adorable nephew and as a delightful cousin who came home to his Kentucky roots not nearly often enough. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him here. He was the grandson of the late Fronia & Granvil Cravens of Sano, KY, and the late E.P. & Audrey Waggener of Columbia, KY Click on headline for complete obituary with photo(s) Philip Glenn Cravens, 69, passed away Wednesday, December 21, 2016. He was a long time resident of Greenwood, IN. The best part of Phil was the laughter that he brought to a room. He had a humor that would strike people to laugh from their toes. He had spontaneous timing of words which kept bellows of laughter wherever he was. When friends or family think of Phil, typically conversation involves Volleyball, Amtrak, Vietnam, Family, and the love he had for animals. Visitation will be held at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service & Crematory, Greenwood Chapel 481 W. Main Street, Greenwood, IN, on Tuesday, December 27, 2016 from 3pm-7pmCT/4pm-8pmET. A celebration of Phil's life will take place at 10amCT/11amET, Wednesday December 28, 2016 at Concordia Lutheran Church, 305 Howard Road, Greenwood, IN with calling from 9amCT/10amET to service time. Burial will be at the Concordia Cemetery in Indianapolis, IN. Contributions can be made to Company D 151. The son of the late Dr. Paul Cravens and Wilma Jean (Waggener) Cravens, who survives, he was born October 5, 1947 in Indianapolis, IN. He graduated Southport High School in 1966. He joined the National Guard after graduation. Two weeks after he went through Advanced Infantry Training, Jump School they told him he was going to Vietnam. They were the highest trained unit in the Army. He went on to complete Recondo school. He was in Vietnam the last of 1968 and most of 1969. He was part of Military D Company 151st Airborne Rangers. He earned several medals, including two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star. He was a hero to our family as well as to our nation. He furthered his higher education in 1969 when he attended Lindsey Wilson College in Columbia, Kentucky. He married Sue (Hibner) Cravens on June 21, 1975. They had a remarkable love story and were married for 31 years. Survivors include his mother Wilma Jean Waggener Cravens and the following:
Some of the best times had were with his fellow Army Rangers. Their stories are remarkable as they were the highest decorated unit in Vietnam. He bled red, white, and blue and had the spirit of a true American. His spirit will linger on and be shared with generations of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. This leads me to his huge heart and definitive character. He was a strong man that expressed emotion and loved whole heartedly. He was a true "Cravens" who was not afraid to express his love with hugs and kisses or verbally say "I love you" or "I'm so proud of you" even if in the middle of a crowded room. He showed great strength, endurance, and acceptance during his illness this past year. Send condolences to the family of Philip Glenn Cravens Contributions can be made to Company D 151.
