News from the office of Adair CJE Michael L. Stephens

Temperatures are falling in south central Kentucky and with the seasonal weather change the Adair County Road Department is preparing for potentially hazardous driving conditions.

In the case of winter weather, motorists are encouraged to only travel in the event of an emergency.

Drivers should remember that bridges, overpasses and driveways can become slippery and dangerous. Use extreme caution, drive slowly, and allow for extra time. Black ice is almost invisible on the roadways and slick spots can form anywhere.

Accumulations of snow, sleet, or freezing rain are to be expected during the coming winter months and the county road crews would like to remind citizens that county roads are prioritized based on need (medical necessity, beef/chicken/milk producers, through roads, or dead-ends). The road department will monitor the weather and state of roads and take necessary action for icy conditions.

In the event of accumulating winter precipitation, motorists with concerns about road conditions or to report hazardous areas should contact 911; however, citizens are asked to only call in the case of an emergency or accident as the roads will be cleared on the determined prioritized schedule. Adair County Road Foreman Terry Corbin reminds residents that road crews can only travel roads that are deemed safe for operators, but assures the public that crews will work diligently to make roadways safe for motorists in a timely manner.

If there is a question regarding whether a road meets the criteria for prioritized road access or not, contact the magistrate for the district in which the road is located so it can be added to the list: District 1 Harold Burton -- 270-250-2460; District 2 Daryl Flatt -- 270-634-1033; District 3 Sammy Baker -- 270-378-1536; District 4 Perry Reeder -- 270-634-3234; District 5 Billy Coffey -- 270-250-4449; District 6 Greg Caldwell -- 270-250-3160; District 7 Terry Hadley -- 270-634-4565.
