Gloria Layne Popplewell, 75, Russell Co., KY (1941-2016)

She was a member of and matriarch of a distinguished Russell County, KY family. She was born in Jamestown, KY, and was a resident of the city at the time of her death in Jamestown, KY. She was the daughter of the late Della Rae (Bernard) and William Arvester Dabney, and the wife of Dr. H.K. Popplewell, DMD. She leaves 12 direct living descendants. She was a retired after 40 years as Dental Office Manager. She was a member of the Jamestown Christian Church. She was dedicated to her family, believed in education, and remained an avid learner throughout her life. She loved Duplicate Bridge and taught many others to participate in the game. She supported the library and was an avid reader. She earned a Presidential Medal for living with Type I diabetes for over 50 years.

Gloria Layne Popplewell, 75, of Jamestown, KY, passed away on Friday, November 4, 2016, at her home in Jamestown, KY.

A Memorial Service for Gloria Layne Popplewell will be held at H.E. Pruitt Memory Chapel in Jamestown, KY at 6pmCT, on Thursday, November 10, 2016, Friends may visit 2pm-6pmCT, Thursday, November 10, 2016 at the funeral home.



Gloria Layne Popplewell, Russell Co., KY (1941-2016)


She was born in Jamestown, Russell County, KY on February 10, 1941. She was a daughter of the late Della Rae (Bernard) and William Arvester Dabney. She died Friday, November 4, 2016, in Jamestown, Russell County, KY, at the age of 75 years, eight months, and 25 days.

She was a retired Dental Office manager and a member of the Jamestown Christian Church.

She worked in the Popplewell Family Dentistry office for more than 40 years, alongside her husband.

The greatest love of her life was her family, and their wellbeing was her greatest interest in life. She always gave them more than 100%. She believed in education and continuously strived to learn about everything.

She directed the Duplicate Bridge Club and taught bridge lessons to many. She supported the library and was an avid reader. Throughout life, she enjoyed fishing, and baking. Gloria lived with Type 1 diabetes for 62 years and received a Presidential Medal for living with Type 1 diabetes for over 50 years.

Gloria Layne is survived by the following:
  • Her husband: Dr. H.K. Popplewell, DMD

  • Her son Dr. H. James (Johnna) Popplewell, DMD

  • Her daughter: Sandra F. Popplewell, NP

  • A brother

  • Four grandchildren

  • Six great grandchildren
Family request memorial donations to the Jamestown Christian Church or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and can be made at the funeral home.
