Schools are in session today. Mood is somber, respectful Face to Face with inconceivable sadness: Grief counselors, youth ministers, regular counseling staff are helping Adair County High School and Adair County Elementary School Students through a difficult period following tragedy at Sanders Ridge Road and KY 206/Liberty Road in the Pellyton Community of Adair County on Friday, October 28, 2016. See also: KSP Report: Adair County fatalities collision in Pellyton, KY By Ed Waggener Adair County School Superintendent Alan W. Reed said in a telephone interview this morning, that Adair County Schools are in session with classes as usual. There is, today, ample counseling services for those needing it, following the Can AM UTV v. Pickup Truck collision which took the lives of Adair County High School students Macie Drake, 15, and 15 year old Abby Gail Curry, and resulted in injuries to Adair County Middle School eighth grader, 14 year old Raquel Anyega. "We have an incredible array of counselors on hand," he said. "We reasoned that it would be much better to have too many than not enough." Counselors on hand came from GRREC (Green River Regional Educational Cooperative), from Adanta, five youth ministers who serve at the high school, and the Districts own counselors. "There is all kinds of adult help available," he said. Attention to detail included assigning two counselors to the buses the students rode. Adair County Schools Director of Transportation David Jones said that all three of the crash victims had ridden Bus No. 48, home, on Friday. Today, Wes Irvin rode with the students on that bus, which is driven by Robbie Davidson, Mr. Jones said. He said that Counselor Crystal Cundiff was aboard Bus 66, driven by John Spears. The preparation is turning out to have been needed. "Students are coming in to get help with grief counseling or to just have someone to talk it out with," Superintendent Reed said. Superintendent Reed said that for the younger students, at ACMS the tragedy has created an even greater need for counseling, as they are dealing with the loss of their friends in high school, as well as the continued concern for the their ACMS schoolmate who is still in hospital for injuries sustained in the collision. At ACMS, he said, more of the students are talking in small groups. "It's apparent what they are talking about," he said. "It is not an easy time for them today," but they are going through this sad time, together, as we all do, in times of great loss." Superintendent Reed said that he had not seen exact figures yet, but that attendance appears to be good. "What is evident," he said, "is that our students are where they need to be. They are safe, and working through the stages of grief in the with friends and those who love and care for them every day." The funeral services for the two have not been set. When they are, Superintendent Reed said, "We'll make appropriate announcements. Our plan is not one day at a time - we've prepared for such an unthinkable event," he said, and added that, so far, the plan is working as best it could, under the circumstances."
