LWC Volleyball sweeps The Master's, No. 14 Missouri Baptist Blue Raiders finish 3-0 at Spartan Invitational Next:Lindsey Wilson Volleyball hosts Cumberland (TN) at 4:30pmCT and 6:30pmCT, Thursday October 13, 2016, at Biggers Sports Center, 360 Spickard Drive, Columbia, KY. LOUIS - The No. 5-ranked Lindsey Wilson volleyball team completed perfect 3-0 sweeps of The Master's (CA) and No. 14-ranked Missouri Baptist on Saturday on the final day of the Spartan Invitational. The Blue Raiders (19-1), who outlasted No. 9 Grand View (Iowa) on Friday night in a five-set thriller, completed the perfect weekend with two more wins on Saturday to improve to 8-1 on the year against opponents ranked or receiving votes in the NAIA Coaches' Poll. Both matches saw a well-balanced Blue Raider offense combined with strong defensive efforts at the net. GAME 1: Lindsey Wilson vs. The Master's After trailing 4-2 in the opening set, the Blue Raiders rolled off seven-straight points, eventually using a 10-1 run to take a 12-5 lead. Lindsey Wilson extended its lead to as many as nine points before taking the set 25-17. Lindsey Wilson outhit the Mustangs (14-9) .410 to .209 in the set as Makenzie Montano assisted on 17 of the Blue Raiders' 25 points. Set two saw the Blue Raiders one again eclipse the .400 mark, this time hitting .474 en route to the 25-16 win. The frame was tight in the early stages, but LWC took the lead after it was 8-8 and never looked back as a 9-4 run made it 17-12, and an 8-4 advantage down the stretch closed out the set. The Lindsey Wilson defense held strong racking up five blocks while limiting the Mustangs to a .188 mark and forcing The Master's into seven attacking errors. Another fast start in set three saw Lindsey Wilson jump out to an 11-3 lead. Three-straight points by The Master's made it 11-6, but that's as close as the Mustangs would get as LWC dominated the remainder of the set, putting together string after string of points and eventually taking the frame 25-14. Lindsey Wilson hit .313 in the final frame compared to .033 by the Mustangs. The Blue Raiders outhit The Master's .389 to .152 in the match. Lauren Streets led the Lindsey Wilson attack in one of her best statistical efforts of the season, recording a team-high 11 kills on 20 swings for a .450 attacking percentage, her highest in a match this season with at least 10 attempts. Montano, Grace Blomstedt, Elly Burke and Eileen Acuna each had seven kills. Montano also had 35 assists while Caitlyn Tino had a team-best 12 digs, narrowly edging Acuna's 11. GAME 2: Lindsey Wilson vs. Missouri Baptist Lindsey Wilson opened the match with a 7-3 lead, but the Spartans (20-6) quickly worked their way back into the set. The Blue Raiders created a slim margin of separation, but Missouri Baptist cut the lead down to two at 16-14. Following an LWC timeout, the well-balanced Blue Raider offense rolled off five-straight points to take a 21-14 lead. That cushion would last the remainder of the set before Burke closed things out with a cross-court kill to give the Blue Raiders the 25-18 win. Offensively, LWC hit .324 in the frame while the big Blue Raider front line held the Spartans to a .030 mark with four blocks, causing seven Missouri Baptist attacking errors. Missouri Baptist took the early lead in set two at 5-3, but five-consecutive points helped put the Blue Raiders up 10-6 after a 7-1 run. The Spartans trimmed the lead down to two points, but another three-point surge by the Blue Raiders put LWC ahead 16-11. Missouri Baptist continued to battle and got the lead down to two once more at 20-18, but LWC grabbed points in bunches and a three-point swing made it 23-18 before Acuna put things to an end with a kill for the 25-21 win. Both squads struggled in the second set, Lindsey Wilson hitting .143 and Missouri Baptist hitting .133, while each team committed seven attacking errors. Set three saw the Spartans jump out again to the early lead again and hold it for much longer this time as Missouri Baptist went up 11-5 out of the gate. LWC struggled at the net early committing eight attacking errors before the Blue Raiders had scored 12 team points. But just like before, the Blue Raiders chipped away, scoring points in surges, eventually bringing things level at 16-16. Lindsey Wilson took its first lead of the set at 18-17, and after it was tied 19-19, the Blue Raiders rolled off four straight for the 23-19 advantage, highlighted by a pair of blocks from Blomstedt and Streets. Blomstedt then capped off the match with a kill to take the set 25-20. LWC hit .029 in the final frame but held the Spartans to a -.105 mark. The Blue Raiders committed just one more attacking error after their early eight while forcing Missouri Baptist into 12 hitting miscues. The Blue Raiders finished the match hitting .164. Missouri Baptist, who entered the day ranked in the top five in attacking percentages, where held to a season-low .026 by the Blue Raider defense. Blomstedt led the squad with nine kills, followed by Burke with eight. Montano had 32 assists and Tino had 14 digs. This story was posted on 2016-10-10 02:03:45
