William Rowe family sharing good news this morning Rowe farms and its family are a regular part of the Columbiamagazine.com family, always in positive light and usually with beautiful scenic photos. This week, however, news of this family has spread of a Saturday evening emergency followed by alarm and prayers as the community gathered around them in prayers and support for the youngest, William, 10, who was badly hurt in an auto accident. Because William's uncle Christopher Rowe is a writer who is used to documenting and sharing, and gave his permission to share with readers, we have his words to lead us through the family's view of what happened and what is happening now with this wonderful child who remains in all our prayers. -- Linda Waggener Christopher Rowe's post, Sunday, Oct. 2, 6:12amET "news from my father"-- Billy Rowe, "My son Freddy and Grandson William were in a serious accident. Freddy seems to be ok but William is in very serious condition looking at multiple surgery for broken bones in his face and head. Surgeries will be in 6 to 12 hours with more than one team of doctors operating on him. Please pray for William, Freddy and Bridget and the doctors and nurses. Wrong, going to surgery immediately." CR Sunday, Oct. 2, 2016, 11:50amET Christopher Rowe, Lexington, "in answer to questions I've been getting about my brother's and nephew's wreck... Freddy's bruised but unbroken. They did a CT scan of him last night but released him. He's sore. They got rear ended hard enough to shove their stationary SUV over a hundred feet. William was belted into the back seat behind Fred. He's been in surgery almost five hours: three teams--neurosurgeons, facial bone guys, and eye and ear guys all working simultaneously. The brain guys finished up about an hour ago. They repaired the fractures to his skull but found that one fragment had cut into his brain. They described it as "penetrating the sac" and said there was no bleeding, which I guess is a good thing. It'll be hours until they can do any kind of assessment because the other surgeons are still working and then he'll have to come out if anesthesia. Apparently North 55 out of Columbia is now three lanes from the edge of town to the county line. At the point where they were sitting waiting on oncoming traffic to turn left onto Keltner Road there's no turning lane, so northbound traffic turning there (or into Betty's Restaurant a hundred yards on up the hill) has to stop and wait in the "fast" lane if they're turning left. So they were sitting there, and a car was passing them on the right when a truck behind THAT car elected to pass the car in the right hand lane and was apparently doing 60+ and accelerating when he hit them. Dude walked away without a scratch. CR Sunday, Oct. 2, 2016 Twenty people and counting, waiting on word. 4:57pmET William's surgery lasted about 7 1/2 hours. His parents were allowed to see him but not speak to him yet. The last team that finished said that he did great but it will still be a long while probably before there's anything more definitive to share. We're going the cautiously optimistic route and everybody in my family wants all of y'all to know how much the outpouring of love and supporting messages has meant to all of us. Thank you all so much. Oh, and because I apparently neglected to mention this, William is 10. 7:47pmET I am thankful for the mind boggling number of people who helped save my nephew William's life. First responders in various services in Adair County, nurses and doctors there and along the way, a medical flight crew, technicians and administrative personnel, and most of all the crack team of surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists, and others who put in long hours in the operating theater today. These are the days of miracles and wonders, and those are worked by often unthanked people with long years of education and experience lending them the expertise needed to save, support, and improve the lives of others. CR Monday, Oct. 3, 2016, 12:30pmET William update. The news is good! they have removed his intracranial monitor because it was detecting no elevated pressure in the brain and also his breathing intubation (I'm not 100% sure on all this vocabulary). He's responding to people's voices, and has even said a couple of words. William has expressed worry that he has a library book coming due. If somebody in Adair County could let the public library know it might be a little late he would appreciate it. I'll cover any fines. CR This morning, Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2016 William's parents, my brother Fred and sister-in-law Bridget... Like their son, they are each showing extraordinary courage and strength of will under these astonishingly trying circumstances. We're worried about them, too. I'm told love and faith are boundless, so please partition out a bit of that all y'all are so gratifyingly sending William for these two good people, whom I'm sure will appreciate it.
