LWC Volleyball cruises past Pikeville 3-0

By Charlie Balcom

Pikeville, KY - The second-ranked Lindsey Wilson volleyball team cruised to its 13th straight-sets victory of the season on Wednesday night as the Blue Raiders took down Pikeville 3-0 (25-19, 25-5, 25-11) at UPIKE Gymnasium.

Lindsey Wilson (15-1, 6-1 Mid-South Conference) never trailed in the match and has now won 20 straight against the Bears (12-8, 1-4 MSC) dating back to the 2005 season.

After a tight opening set where Lindsey Wilson pulled away late, the Blue Raiders dominated the final two frames, allowing just 16 total points to the Bears en route to outhitting the hosts .341 to .025 on the night.

No Lindsey Wilson player reached double-digit kills, but seven Blue Raiders had at least four kills led by Eileen Acuna's nine. Grace Blomstedt followed by seven as Pamela De Leon had five in two sets played. Makenzie Montano, who moved into fourth place on the program's all-time assists leaders list in Tuesday's match against Cumberlands (Ky.), led the team with 27 assists in the win. Caitlyn Tino added a team-high nine digs.

The Blue Raiders started the match fast, jumping out to an early 6-1 lead in the opening set. The Bears hung around and eventually clawed things back level at 12-12 and again at 13-13. But then Lindsey Wilson began creating separation with strings of points, doubling up Pikeville 12-6 over the final 18 points to take the set 25-19.

Both teams struggled in the opening set on the offensive end, Lindsey Wilson hitting .171 compared to .161 by Pikeville, with 11 total combined attacking errors. The Blue Raiders also added a trio of points via service aces.

Lindsey Wilson carried the momentum it built at the end of set one into the second frame and won the first nine points before a service error ended the 9-0 streak. The Blue Raider domination continued from there as LWC surrendered just five points in the set en route to the 25-5 victory. Lindsey Wilson vastly improved on the attacking front, hitting .545 on 22 swings with 13 kills and just one error. The big defensive line held Pikeville to a -.261 attacking percentage in the set.

Another quick start to set three saw Lindsey Wilson move ahead 16-10 before closing the night out on a 9-1 run to take the set 25-11. The Blue Raiders swung at a .387 clip on 31 attempts with 15 kills and three errors, limiting the Bears to a .111 mark in the process.

Sydney Hall led Pikeville with six kills as Savanna Zakman had 16 assists. Lindsey Wilson returns to action on Oct. 4 when Georgetown (Ky.) comes to Biggers Sports Center.
