First day of Fairgrounds dismantling project off to good start It's a huge undertaking, but if the first day is any indication, moving the fairgrounds is going to happen, before the January 1, 2017 deadline. Volunteers with strong backs and tool kits, contractors and businesses with equipment, are needed today and next Saturday for the effort to succeed. Click on headline for complete story with photo(s) By Linda & Ed Waggener This Saturday morning, some of Adair County's most dedicated volunteers were on hand to begin a herculean task of salvaging as much as possible of the fairgrounds equipment at the historic Adair County Fairgrounds. But if today is any indication, they will succeed. The Jaycees have until January 1, 2017, to take down as many of the bleachers and specified buildings as they can before Lindsey Wilson College, which purchased the property from Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6097, takes over. But the Jaycees do see a path to getting the work done by the deadline, if the early enthusiasm and commitment continues to grow. Already, besides the volunteers "with strong backs and tool kits," there have been major offers of assistance. This morning, Chester Taylor of Taylor Services dropped by with an offer to remove the cover of the main bleachers. And on standby now, parked ready to use, is a Rogers Trucking flatbed semi, which will be used to transport the equipment the Jaycees salvage to the a storage facility provided by Joe Collins. Still needed, Greg Thomas said, are contractors who can provide operators with the big beams, lifts, cherry pickers, scissor lifts, forklifts, front end loaders, and other equipment. The value of the equipment and buildings the Jaycees may be able to salvage is enormous. Jennifer Carter, current president of the Adair County Fair Board, and Greg Thomas, past president, said that the value of the equipment, paid for by the Adair County Jaycees, was in the $92-96,000 range, in 1997, and that it's replacement cost would be well over $100,000 today. Other bleachers the Jaycees plan to salvage had an original cost of over $25,000, Thomas and Carter said. The group is looking to remove all but the pad of the Pavilion. That structure cost over $100,000 when built. They are also studying the removal of chain link fences around the fairground, but are unsure of the value in doing so. As for historic stables and the 1884 building, the Jaycees hope to have them, but they are unsure, now if they will be able to do that. All volunteers are still needed. Next Saturday, October 1, 2017 is set up as a work day. Those with with strong backs and tool kits starting at 8amCT. Workers get free lunch. Cash will be needed to fund re-establishment of an Adair County Fairground. An account where cash donations may be made to the Fairgrounds Building Fund has been established at the Bank of Columbia. Jennifer Carter said that all three locations of the bank, Downtown, Reed Street Branch, and Jamestown Street, will be accepting the funds. As well, the Jaycees plan to set up a foundation within the Lake Area Foundation to endow the new fairground. Carter said that more will be released on that as the plan develops.
