Pike Co. Deputy Circuit Court Clerk pleads guilty Deputy clerk ordered to pay more than $5,800 in restitution, issue apology, admit guilt in abuse of public trust case By Terry Sebastian/Crystal Staley News from the office of KY Attorney General Andy Beshear FRANKFORT, KY. (Fri 23 Sep 2016) - Attorney General Andy Beshear has announced a former Pike County Deputy Circuit Court Clerk pleaded guilty today in Franklin Circuit Court to abuse of public trust under $10,000. Bethany Smith, 36, of Pikeville, received one year probated for three years and was placed on felony pre-trial diversion by Franklin Circuit Judge Thomas Wingate. Smith, who served as bookkeeper in the clerk's office, will be formally sentenced Nov. 18. The case was investigated by the Department of Criminal Investigations within the Office of the Attorney General after the Administrative Office of the Courts performed an audit of the Pike County Circuit Court Clerk's office and discovered the missing funds. Beshear's Office of Special Prosecutions prosecuted the case. "Kentuckians have a right to expect that public officials follow the law and uphold public trust," Beshear said. "I want to thank my investigators and prosecutors for their hard work on this case, and I appreciate our partnership with AOC. Working together we can hold accountable any public official who seek to defraud taxpayers." Wingate ordered Smith to pay $5,872.01 in restitution, issue an apology and admit guilt. Smith will give her apology at her sentencing in November. This story was posted on 2016-09-24 05:45:55
