Malvina Farkle Day: A Day of Service for the community

From Lindsey Wilson College

Lindsey Wilson College sophomore and Media Studies major, Grace Blomstedt of Red Oak, Iowa, always looks forward to Malvina Farkle Day because of her love for her "home away from home".

Blomstedt, a member of the LWC Volleyball team, spent the day of service with her teammates at the Ol' Homeplace Adult Care Center.

"Working with the people at the Ol' Homeplace made me feel closer to some members of the community," said Blomstedt, "It's always a great feeling to give back to the community you consider your home away from home."

Malvina Farkle Day is named in memory of a mythical Lindsey Wilson alumna and staff member who lived a life of service and having fun. Classes are dismissed for the day while students spend the morning working on community service projects. The afternoon includes campus games, activities, and lunch on the quad.

Casey Stenger, a Junior from London, KY and a member of the Bonner Scholar program believes that service and the family atmosphere emphasized at LWC is perfectly reflected in Malvina Farkle day. Stenger spent her day of service at the newly implemented LWC Campus Kitchen.

"LWC is family, at least that's how I've felt since the first time I visited the college," said Stenger, "Service is important in that LWC's family bond grows a little every Malvina Farkle day because we come together to reach out and give back to a community that gives so much to us every day."

Before he dismissed classes for the day, LWC President William T. Luckey Jr. told a packed Roberta D. Cranmer Dining & Conference Center that the LWC has a strong history of community service, noting the LWC community gave more than 27,000 hours of community service last school year.

"We have an amazing opportunity to expand our footprint beyond this main campus," Luckey said. "It's just a reminder to ourselves about how blessed we are and at the same time what a wonderful difference we can make in this community or wherever we are."

The community organizations LWC students, faculty and staff served during Malvina Farkle Day were:
- Adair County Elementary School

- Adair County Middle School

- Adair County Primary Center

- Adair County Friends and Neighbors

- Adair County Head Start

- Agape House

Director of Student Activities, Lafawn Nettles, says Malvina Farkle Day is "by far my favorite day on campus."

"It just shows the public that we are not just a college focused on academics, that we are also service minded," said Nettles, "That's really why it's by far my favorite day on campus. Lindsey Wilson College and this yearly tradition truly embodies what it means to be a service orientated institution."
