Wish granted for Adair County 8th grader Laura Furkins gets the star treatment when limo from Make-a-Wish arrives at Adair County Middle School. 'She had no idea we were going to Bowling Green, and she definitely didn't know about the limo,' her mother Louise says. 'We've only seen limos in movies. This is a great blessing.' Click on headline for complete story with photo(s). By Wes Feese Media Relations, Adair County Schools The limousine, shiny and black, pulled out of Adair County Middle School and headed toward the Cumberland Parkway, en route to Bowling Green. Long and sleek, the vehicle looked a little out of place in a small town like Columbia. Inside sat an Adair County eighth grader, Laura Furkins, whose wish was granted Tuesday by Make-A-Wish Kentucky. "Today is a special day--we get to grant Laura's wish," Make-A-Wish Kentucky board chairman Craig Peterhansen says. "We're starting here with the limo pickup at school and we're going to shoot down to Bowling Green for a day of shopping. We'll stop at Ashley Furniture, who's donating Laura a bed, then to a hair salon followed by a photo shoot, then to Greenwood Mall where we'll roll out a red carpet and she can shop all day. Then we'll wrap up with dinner and head home." Laura was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a rare congenital heart defect in which the left side is severely underdeveloped. She did not know her wish would be granted. "I was surprised," Laura says. "My wish came true." Laura's mother, Louise Furkins, says Laura knew she was going shopping, but did not know any other details. "She had no idea we were going to Bowling Green, and she definitely didn't know about the limo," Louise says. "We've only seen limos in movies. This is a great blessing." Louise says she hopes Laura's story will raise awareness about childhood heart conditions. "It's something a lot of people don't know much about," Louise says. "The more people know and the more are aware, the closer they'll get to solving it." This story was posted on 2016-09-20 10:47:13
