FRANKFORT, KY (14 Sep 2016) At the request of women veterans for a conference close to their homes, the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs is holding the first ever Eastern Kentucky Women Veterans Regional Conference in Hazard on October 1, 2016.

"Women veterans throughout Kentucky let us know that they needed regional conferences near their communities," said KDVA Commissioner Norman Arflack. "As the primary goal of the Women Veterans Program is to reach out to women veterans in their communities, we are happy to come to them."

"I am eager to meet more women veterans in Eastern Kentucky," said LuWanda Knuckles, Kentucky Women Veterans Program Coordinator. "Especially women veterans who may feel isolated from a veteran community, this conference is where we can meet and make lasting connections."

"We are pleased to welcome the Eastern Kentucky Women's Veterans Regional Conference to Hazard next month," Sen. Brandon Smith said. "This will be a great opportunity for female veterans in the area to connect and share ideas. I appreciate the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs for organizing this event and all the others who played a role in attracting this meeting to Eastern Kentucky."

In addition to speaker Marj Graves, the conference will offer workshops on veterans benefits and services, which women veterans often do not seek; women's health care; organizing women veterans groups, and employment.

Perry County Judge-Executive Scott Alexander will open the conference with welcoming remarks. There will be a complimentary lunch and a performance by the Letcher County High School Drill Team, as well as door prizes and veteran-interest vendors.
