COLUMBIA, Ky. -- With just two days before the second-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team takes to the pitch for a rematch of last season's championship game with top-ranked Spring Arbor (MI), the Blue Raiders were hard at work at Walter S. Reuling Stadium on Thursday night.

Hard at work teaching the game they all love.

Under the lights, LWC women's soccer student-athletes were teaching fundamentals, providing encouragement and directing more than 100 youth from Adair County and the surrounding area in their annual youth soccer league.

"We love exposing the youth in our community to the game of soccer," Lindsey Wilson women's soccer coach Drew Burwash said. "While I know the youth enjoy themselves, our student-athletes get just as much, if not more out of this league."

The league, which runs through mid-October for ages 3-13, started more than a decade ago with numbers hovering around 30. This year, more than 150 signed up -- making this one of the largest leagues in the history of the program.

The youth are introduced to fundamentals during a weekly training session led by the Blue Raider women's soccer team and then get to put those new skills to work on Saturdays.

With Lindsey Wilson's upcoming trip to Spring Arbor this Saturday -- which has been deemed the NAIA Women's Soccer Game of the Week -- Thursday turned into this week's game day.

"We love the support we get from the Adair County-Columbia community during our season," Burwash said. "This is a small way for us to give back."
