Campbellsville High School freshmen Lauryn Agathen and Aleah Knifley attended the Rogers Explorers program this summer.

The Rogers Explorers program is an intensive three-day, two-night program focused on cultivating skills in leadership, technology, math, science and community service. It is developed, coordinated and supervised by The Center for Rural Development.

Agathen and Knifley attended the program on June 8-10 at Lindsey Wilson College in Columbia.

They said they learned about leadership, met new people and had lots of fun.

Agathen said her Rogers Explorers experience consisted of building relationships with the other explorers and "having a love for things I didn't know I liked."

She said attending Rogers Explorers helped her value everything in her life, and learn that everything has a purpose.

"One example being in my sustainability class, in that my [professor] showed us an innovative way to turn vegetable oil into a healthy, usable hand soap," she said.

Knifley said the Rogers Explorers program was a great experience, and a good way for her to experience a college campus.

"I also gained better leadership skills and a better confidence in myself," she said.

Knifley learned from the Rogers Explorers experience that anyone can be a leader, if they set goals and tell themselves they can meet those goals.

She said she also learned about sustainability, which was her favorite subject, science and communication.

"Rogers Explorers helped me gain confidence and to not be afraid to speak out," she said. "It also just helped me to just be myself and not care what others say."

Agathen said the Rogers Explorers program taught her that she can change the world around her.

"It will help me to never underestimate myself and my abilities," she said. "In the classroom, I have learned to be confident in myself and my views."
