Darius Clement promoted to full-time assistant coach at CU

By Jordan Alves
CU sports information director

Campbellsville, KY - After being around the program for more than nine years, 23-year old Darius Clement is the newest addition to the Campbellsville University men's basketball coaching staff.

Head coach Brent Vernon has announced the promotion of Clement as the Tigers second assistant for the 2016-17 year.

"I am so glad to have Darius become a full-time member of our staff after a year as our graduate assistant," said Vernon. "He has worked extremely hard in many different areas to get to this point. Darius is going to be such a valuable asset to our staff because of his love for Campbellsville University and because of his love for the basketball program that he played for here."

Clement came to Campbellsville in 2011 because his brother, Shawn Savage, was also a member of the men's basketball team and he was comfortable with the environment under former coach Keith Adkins.

Being a Bowling Green, Ky. native, the drive was short and just close enough to home for his dad and family to come to many, if not all games -- home and away.

"I always appreciated looking up in the stands and seeing my dad at almost every game of my career... In Vegas, Oklahoma, Kansas City, the list could go on," said Clement. "Last year he was able to make it to a lot of games even though I was on the sideline as a graduate assistant and now that I am getting my first full-time coaching opportunity, my family is just as excited as I am.

"After my playing days were over, I decided to comeback and take the GA spot at Campbellsville because I missed it. Now this place is home. I appreciate the trust Coach Vernon has instilled in me to be on his staff. This summer has been a grind in the recruiting process but I'm excited for the team the coaching staff has assembled this year and I'm ready to get started when our players get on campus."

In his senior season, Clement helped lead the Tigers to their second MSC regular season and tournament championship. He was also named the Mid-South Conference Champions of Character.

As a four-year varsity player his career stats included 724 total points, 232 assists and 231 rebounds. He averaged 79.2 percent on free throws and shot 36.3 percent from behind the 3-point line.

Clement graduate with a bachelors degree in business administration and is pursuing a Masters degree in sports management.

Responsibilities for Clement will include: individual player workouts, skill development, recruiting, scouting reports and being the head coach for the men's junior varsity basketball team.

"There will be some things that Darius is going to have to learn on the fly with this job but there are so many things that he understands and does so well," said Vernon. "He is amazing in the individual improvement area and is very dedicated to the scouting of our opponents. As the year progresses I know he is going to prove to be a great recruiter as well."

Winter and spring student-athletes report to campus Friday-Saturday, Aug. 26-27 with classes starting Monday, Aug. 29.

Vernon, his assistant coach and brother Mark Vernon and Clement will announce the 2016-17 recruiting class next week with the completion of their schedule to be released in September.
