AppLE Awards Nomination deadline extended

Forward in the Fifth (FIF), a nonprofit education organization that helps to raise educational attainment levels in the Fifth Congressional District, has extended the Appalachian Leaders in Education (AppLE) Awards nominations through September 30th.

Now in its fifth year, the AppLE Awards recognize leaders in education, including local parent and student groups, who have made significant contributions to promote and support education in Forward in the Fifth's 45-county primary service region.

"Education plays an important role in our personal and regional success," says Jim Tackett, FIF Executive Director. "Whether in a formal or informal setting, we can all identify with individuals who were instrumental in ensuring positive outcomes for us and others. The passion, enthusiasm, and expertise these heroes exhibit are appreciated and deserve being recognized."



The AppLE Award categories for nominations include:
  • Educators (early childhood, K-12, higher education, adult education)

  • Community/Business Leader

  • Parent or Parent Group

  • Student or Student Group

Visit www.fif.org and click on the Awards tab for more information on the AppLE award categories, eligibility requirements, and nomination forms. Nominations submitted by mail, telephone or fax will not be accepted.

Nominees' efforts must occur within Forward in the Fifth's 45-county primary service area, which includes: Adair, Bath, Bell, Boyd, Breathitt, Carter, Casey, Clay, Clinton, Cumberland, Elliott, Estill, Floyd, Garrard, Green, Harlan, Jackson, Jessamine, Johnson, Knott, Knox, Laurel, Lawrence, Lee, Leslie, Letcher, Lincoln, Magoffin, Martin, McCreary, Menifee, Metcalfe, Monroe, Morgan, Owsley, Perry, Pike, Pulaski, Rockcastle, Russell, Rowan, Taylor, Wayne, Whitley, and Wolfe counties.

Finalists will be notified by the organization, and winners will be announced during Forward in the Fifth's 30th anniversary celebration and upcoming summit on Wednesday, November 9th at The Center for Rural Development in Somerset, KY.

Forward in the Fifth, a non-profit organization and an affiliate of The Center for Rural Development, was formed in 1986 by U.S. Congressman Harold "Hal" Rogers, (KY-05), and other leaders to work to reverse low education attainment levels in the Fifth Congressional District. The organization strives to engage community stakeholders to advance the value of education; serves as advocates to advance all education systems to improve educational attainment; and supports schools and stakeholders to secure needed resources to improve the quality of education within their local communities.
