Cumberland Co Extension District cuts ribbon on livestock demonstration facility

By Emily Milam

Burkesville, KY - Governor's Office of Agricultural Policy staff, Cumberland County Extension District Board Members, local producers and members of the Cumberland County 4-H Agriculture Entrepreneur club cut the ribbon commemorating the opening of the Cumberland County livestock demonstration facility on Wednesday, August 3, 2016.

The Cumberland County Extension District received $5,500 in Cumberland County Agricultural Development Funds to construct the 24' x 24' post-framed building. The new livestock demonstration facility will give Cumberland County youth enrolled in the 4-H Agriculture Entrepreneur club the opportunity to learn about livestock production.

"The Kentucky Agricultural Development Board is pleased to assist in the education of young people interested in animal agriculture through the partial funding of this livestock demonstration facility. The new facility will enhance the educational experience of participating 4-H members and allow for growth within the program," said Warren Beeler, GOAP executive director.

Members of the Cumberland County 4-H Agriculture Entrepreneur club are able to utilize the facility for educational purposes. The club is open to all youth who live in Cumberland County between the ages of nine and 18.

"In addition to helping youth learn about livestock production and economics, this facility will allow youth who do not have access to a farm the chance to complete a 4-H Livestock Project. Already, 10 4-H youth have learned how to properly raise and care for lambs at this facility. Those 10 individuals have gained invaluable skills as young entrepreneurs," said Elijah Wilson, extension agent for 4-H and Youth Development.

The livestock demonstration facility is located at the Cumberland County Extension Education Center. For more information on this facility, please contact Elijah Wilson at (270) 433-7700 or at Elijah.wilson@uky.edu.
