Columbia Walmart adds efficiency while also adding jobs

By Linda Waggener

Columbia's Walmart now offers a new self checkout option at the front of the store on the food side. Manager Drew Mitchell said it has gone well, on the first day 275 people used the new service in the first few hours. He said many people are able to go right through it because they've used self check in other businesses where it's offered, however, for all who are new to the concept of self checkout there will always be a host available to help.

Self checking is a real help to everyone in rush times during lunch and after work.

"It makes a big difference in efficiency, especially for those who want to go in and out of the store quickly for just a few items," Mitchell said. Assistant store manager Traci Stotts made sure to mention that it does not cut jobs as some have feared -- they've already hired four new people since its installation.

Mitchell added that none of the improvements being made at the store are done with the intention to reduce personnel. They continue to add new jobs every year. This location has enjoyed eight consecutive years of growth since expanding to a super store from its old location on Jamestown Street. He added that he wanted to extend his thanks to all the customers who make the store the success it is.

Columbia's Walmart store has around 225 people on the payroll and, from the start of the super store, it continues to be open 24 hours a day seven days a week and serves customers from Adair and surrounding counties, even as far away as Somerset.

Mitchell said he is proud of the self check service options and of the new exterior paint job -- 450 gallons of paint sprayed on in five days. More work is being done on interior upgrades as well.

He has been with Walmart for 15 years, and over three years as store manager. He and his wife Angie have three daughters, 10, 8 and 6 getting ready to start school soon.
