Remembering Muhammad Ali and an Adair County connection

The historic Santa Fee Baptist Church, on Wheeler Hill Road, is an inspiring sight from any direction, but nowhere more so than from afar midway up Jobe Hill on Lasley Road; and in no season more than these shades of deep green days of Spring. It is inspiring, as well, because of many significant events in its naming and its history.

The church has been home to many distinguished Adair Countians, Columbia's Sammie Hughes, a member of the church recalled a few years back when the photo was taken. He remembers it was once visited by the mother of Muhammad Ali at at time when Ali was known as Cassius Clay, who descended from the Gradys of Santa Fee and Gradyville, KY.

Hughes recalls that during that visit, the congregation and Mrs. Clay discussed how much the language, the rhythms, the humorous rhymes and braggadoccio which endeared Ali to the world were the same patterns his Adair County kin employed.

There is still some discussion about the "Fee" in the name. Many believe it to have been in honor of John Gregg Fee, an abolitionist who founded the town of Berea, KY.

The road by the side of the church leads to a beautifully preserved Rosenwald School, out of sight in this photo. Those interested in the history of our diverse, pluralistic heritage find a visit to the Rosenwald school a very rewarding venture.
