LWC Softball vs. Marian University for NAIA Opening Round title

Five-run first inning leads No. 6 Lindsey Wilson softball to 5-3 victory over Southern Oregon in NAIA Opening Round
TODAY: The championship game is slated to start at 1pmCT at Lindsey Wilson Park, 928 Russell Road, Columbia, KY, and the "if necessary" game will follow. Lindsey Wilson must win two games to claim the title.

COLUMBIA, KY - The top-seeded Lindsey Wilson softball team stayed alive in the NAIA Opening Round with a 5-3 win over No. 21 Southern Oregon on Tuesday evening.



The Blue Raiders (46-13) used a five-run first inning to defeat the Raiders (37-14). Amber Foukes capped off the inning with a three-run home run. Amy Rogers was only other player for Lindsey Wilson with an RBI as she went 2-for-3 at the plate. Abigail Lund was the lone player for Southern Oregon with two hits in the game as she went 2-for-3 including a solo home run.

With Lindsey Wilson playing as the visiting team, they got off to a strong start as Jenna Firestein led off the game with a walk. Firestein then advance to second on a wild pitch and stole third base. After Cassie Kooker walked, Firestein scored on a wild pitch and Kooker moved up to second base on the play.

After a pair of fielder's choices and a single from Sydney Fourman, Rogers drove in Fourman with a single down the right field line. With two runners on base, Foukes hit a three-run home run to centerfield to put the Blue Raiders up 5-0.

Following a Southern Oregon pitching change, Abbi Goedde singled to centerfield, but Lindsey Wilson was unable to add onto their lead.

The Raiders started to chip away at their deficit in third inning as Abigail Lund hit a solo home run to lead off the inning.

In the fourth inning, Kayleen Smith reached on an error to start the inning and Rebecca Velasquez followed with a single to right field. Southern Oregon then executed a double steal, which allowed to Smith to steal home. A second Lindsey Wilson error allowed the Raiders to make it a 5-3 game after Velasquez scored from second base on the error.

The Blue Raiders limited the damage in the inning as they did not allow another run to maintain their two-run lead.

Lyndsey Parden, who relieved Casey Bryan in the middle of the fourth inning, kept Southern Oregon at ease allowing just one hit over the final 3-1/3 innings of play to seal the win for Lindsey Wilson, 5-3.

Lacie Crawford (3-2) suffered the loss for Southern Oregon as she pitched 2/3 of an inning allowing five runs on three hits. Victoria Mackey pitched the final 6-1/3 innings for the Raiders allowing nine hits without surrendering a run. With the loss Southern Oregon is eliminated from the tournament.

Parden (25-5) picked up the win pitching 3-1/3 innings allowing just one hit and striking out five batters. Bryan went 3-2/3 innings in the circle giving up three runs - two earned - on six hits.

With the victory, the Blue Raiders advanced to the championship game of the Lindsey Wilson Bracket against No. 17 Marian (IN). Lindsey Wilson has to beat the Knights twice on Wednesday to win the opening round tournament.
