Vietnam Veteran Memorial experience shared by LWC students

International students visit to the Moving Wall in Edmonton, KY, was special, and more so because of the the special people they met: The Coordinator Louise Firkins, Bowling Park Executive Director Ms. Lisa Boswell; and two Metcalfe Countians whose long romance started at Lindsey Wilson.

May 16, 2016 was the last chance to visit "THE MOVING WALL", the Vietnam Veteran Memorial in Edmonton, KY. It states that it was made for the purpose of "helping heal and rekindle friendships."

I went with two of our international students, Nicholai Brown from Jamaica and Ami Kumazawa from Japan. We were welcomed by veterans who thanked us for coming and then Ms. Louise Firkins, who is the event coordinator at the Bowling Park in Edmonton, offered to take us on a tour to give us a more detailed look at the memorial.

She explained that coins left on top of the wall had a special meaning, a friend or acquaintance may leave a penny, a nickel means they trained together in boot camp, a dime on the wall or gravestone means that the person who left it served in the same company as the deceased and a quarter is the most meaningful of all denominations. A quarter on the gravestone signifies that the person who left it was with the soldier when they died.

While we were walking along, trying to take in name after name of the over 58.000 soldiers who had died, we met a couple who shared that they were LWC alumni. Mr. and Mrs. Billy and Mildred Dillingham Sparks, who attended LWC from 1948 - 1950 were they met and 66 years ago, got married on Spring break!

Could this spontaneous event be getting any more special than it already had been for us? We were introduced to Ms. Lisa Boswell, the Executive Director of the "George K Bowling Park" who invited us to take a tour through Bowling Park, where we were able to take a peak into the wonderfully organized Food Pantry and the Homeless Shelter and were taken on a tour to the "Leftwitch House", a historic house built in the 1800s in the community.

Was this trip more than either one of us had imagined? Yes, you bet! Did I print out facts about the Vietnam War to share with the students - you better believe it! Was this a once in a lifetime - for all of us - opportunity - yes indeed!

A big thank you to all who have helped to make it possible to bring this national tribute to the South Central Kentucky area! Thank you to all the people who made the great sacrifices during the Vietnam War. May it continue to help heal and rekindle friendships and allow people the opportunity to visit loved ones in their hometown who otherwise may not be able to make the trip to Washington. I am blessed and I am grateful to live in such a wonderful community and to be given the opportunity to do what I am doing!
