LWC Softball wins twice, will play Cumberland on Sunday

By Charlie Balcom

Bowling Green, KY - The Lindsey Wilson softball team put together a pair of wins to keep their Mid-South Conference Tournament run alive on Saturday at Michael O. Buchanon Park.

No. 6-ranked Lindsey Wilson (43-11) first defeated Pikeville (Ky.) 11-4 before taking down St. Catharine (Ky.) 4-0 to advance to the consolation bracket finals against Cumberland (Tenn.) on Sunday at 11 a.m. CT. The winner of that game advances to the tournament finals where the winner will have to beat Campbellsville University twice in order to lift the tournament crown.

Lindsey Wilson 11 - Pikeville 4

Lindsey Wilson built an early lead over Pikeville in the opening game of the day. The Blue Raiders opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with a three-run bomb by Bailey Mize. After Jenna Firestein reached on an infield single and Sydney Fourman walked, Mize sent a two-out, full-count pitch beyond the 225-foot centerfield fence to give Lindsey Wilson an early 3-0 lead.

After a scoreless second, the Blue Raiders exploded for six runs in the bottom of the third to take a 9-0 lead over the Bears.

Callum Pilgrim opened the inning with a walk and after moving to second and third on wild pitches, Mize chased her home with a single for her fourth RBI of the game. One batter later with two outs, the Blue Raider offense really went to work. Amy Rogers roped a triple down the right-field line to score Mize, and Abbi Goedde followed with an RBI single to make it 6-0. Brittney Graves then tripled to left center to score Goedde for a 7-0 lead to bring up Firestein.

Firestein proceeded to crush a ball to right-center that rolled all the way to the fence, scoring Graves and allowing Firestein to race around the bases and score for the inside-the-park home run, her second of the season. It marks the second time in Firestein's career she has hit an inside-the-park home run at Michael O. Buchanon Park, also accomplishing the task last season at the conference tournament.

Pikeville finally broke up the shutout in the top of the fourth as they scored three runs. Casey Bryan gave up a one-out single, just her second hit and base runner of the game to start the inning. The Bears proceeded to add two-straight singles to load the bases. A hit by pitch scored the first run, a fielder's choice scored the second, and another single scored the third before a groundout finally brought the inning to an end.

The Blue Raiders responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, using a pair of singles and taking advantage of a pair of Pikeville errors to put Lindsey Wilson up 11-3.

Pikeville twice extended their season in the fifth inning, first by scoring one run in the top half of the inning to break up the run rule, and later getting out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the fifth without surrendering a run to send the game to the sixth with Lindsey Wilson ahead 11-4.

The sixth went by scoreless before the Blue Raiders finally closed things out in the seventh without giving up anymore runs as Lindsey Wilson kept their tournament run alive with the 11-4 win.

Bryan (19-7) picked up the win, allowing four runs, three earned, on nine hits in the complete-game effort. Five Blue Raiders had multiple hits in the game.

With the loss, Pikeville's season comes to an end with a 23-29 record.

Lindsey Wilson 4 - St. Catharine 0

Lindsey Wilson kept the offensive momentum rolling early in the game against the Patriots. The Blue Raider speedsters continued to take advantage of the deep fences at Buchanon Park, starting things off with back-to-back triples.

Firestein slapped a ball to the left-center gap to start, and Cassie Kooker followed with a ball to the same spot that the St. Catharine defense was unable to come up with as Firestein scored the opening run of the game. Pilgrim then grounded out as Kooker scored to give the Blue Raiders an early 2-0 advantage.

After striking out the side in the first and second innings, Blue Raider starter Lyndsey Parden surrendered her first hit of the game when Emily Fenwick reached on a bunt single in the third. Fenwick advanced to second later in the inning, but Parden closed out the frame with her seventh strikeout of the contest.

The Patriots put together their best scoring chance of the game in the top of the fourth after putting runners on second and third with two outs, but Parden zeroed in and struck out her eighth batter of the game to keep St. Catharine off the board. After being retired in order in the third and fourth, the Lindsey Wilson offense added two insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth. Mackenzie Jackson led off with a pinch-hit bunt single and Firestein followed with a single to shallow left. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third before Pilgrim and Fourman followed with back-to-back RBI singles to push the Blue Raider lead to 4-0 after five complete.

St. Catharine again put two runners on in the top of the sixth with one out, but Parden got out of the jam thanks to a diving catch in left by Pilgrim and a groundout ended the inning.

Parden mowed down the Patriots in the seventh as she recorded two more strikeouts to bring her total to 11 for the game as the Blue Raiders won 4-0. Parden (23-3) allowed just three hits in the complete-game victory. Firestein led the way at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance in game two.

St. Catharine's Tiffany Wickline suffered the loss allowing the four earned runs on 11 hits.

With the loss, St. Catharine's season comes to an end with a 26-30 record.

The win moves Lindsey Wilson to the consolation bracket finals against Cumberland on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 11amCT.
