LWC softball sweeps Cumberlands at LW Park today

Fourman's walk-off home run secures sweep for No. 7 Lindsey softball on Senior Day, 9-1 and 4-3

COLUMBIA, KY (Sat 16 Apr 2016) - The seventh-ranked Lindsey Wilson softball capped off their regular season home schedule on Saturday afternoon with a sweep of Mid-South Conference foe, Cumberlands (KY). The Blue Raiders took game one 9-1 in five innings, and a walk-off home run in the 10th inning of game two gave Lindsey Wilson a 4-3 victory to conclude the Senior Day doubleheader.



\ Sydney Fourman led the Blue Raiders (36-10, 21-3 MSC) with two home runs on the day including the walk-off homer in the second game. Fourman also had six RBIs on the day. Casey Bryan earned the win in game one against the Patriots (19-29, 7-21 MSC) allowing just one hit, while Lyndsey Parden picked the win in game two with a season-high 15 strikeouts.

Game 1 - Lindsey Wilson 9, Cumberlands 1

Lindsey Wilson got the scoring started in the first game of the doubleheader as Cassie Kooker delivered a one-out single to centerfield and she was able to move up to second base on a wild throw back to the infield. After a single from Callum Pilgrim to place runners at the corners, Kooker was able to score on wild pitch to give the Blue Raiders a 1-0 lead.

Bryan was dealing in the circle as she retired the first nine batters of the game in order.

In the third inning, the Blue Raiders were able to increase their lead as they scored once in the inning. Kooker reached on error to start the inning, but she was later forced out a second base on fielder's choice from Pilgrim.

After the fielder's choice, Pilgrim moved herself into scoring position with a stolen base. With two outs in the inning for Lindsey Wilson, Bailey Mize delivered a single through the left side of the infield to score Pilgrim, which put the Blue Raiders in front, 2-0.

The Patriots ended Bryan's perfect game at the start of the fourth inning as Kaylee James doubled to left-centerfield. After a sacrifice bunt to move James over to third, Cumberlands executed a safety squeeze bunt to score James and cut their deficit to one run.

The Blue Raiders countered in the home half of the fourth inning with four runs. Abbi Goedde doubled to left field to start the inning and Amy Rogers laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Goedde to third base. With two outs in the inning, Kooker drove in Goedde with a single up the middle. Pilgrim then recorded her second hit of the game with a single down the left field line two put two runners on base. Fourman then blasted a three-run home run over the centerfield wall to put Lindsey Wilson up 6-1.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Lindsey Wilson offense stayed hot as Amber Foukes reached base with a one-out walk and she moved up to second base on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Rogers put two runners on base after she reached base on a walk.

Jenna Firestein then sent a single out to centerfield to, which scored Foukes from second and Rogers moved up to third base. Kooker was able to load the bases for the Blue Raiders with another walk. Pilgrim ended the game with a single to second base, which scooted away from the Patriot second basemen to score Rogers and Firestein.

Lindsey Wilson took the first game of the doubleheader, 9-1, in five innings. Bryan (16-6) pitched all five innings allowing one run on just one hit. Bryan struck out three batters in the game.

Game 2 - Lindsey Wilson 4, Cumberlands 3

A pitcher's duel broke out in game two of the doubleheader as neither team scored until the third inning. The Blue Raiders tried to jump out to a lead in the second inning, but they left bases loaded.

In third inning, Lindsey Wilson was able to push a run across with two outs in the inning. Firestein started the inning with single and a stolen base. After back-to-back fly outs, Fourman and Mize were both hit by a pitch to load the bases. Foukes reached on an infield single to score Firestein from third. The Blue Raiders were unable to add on to their 1-0 lead as they left the bases loaded for the second-straight inning.

Parden had a perfect game going through three innings, but a two-out single from Keli Bruning gave Cumberlands their first baserunner and hit of the game. Parden was able to work around the single to keep Lindsey Wilson ahead, 1-0.

The Blue Raiders took a two-run lead in the fifth inning. Kooker started the inning with a double to left field and Pilgrim reached on an error on an attempted sacrifice bunt. With runners on first and third base, Fourman reached on fielder's choice to score Kooker from third base. Lindsey Wilson took a 2-0 lead into the sixth inning.

Cumberlands was able to string a few hits together in the top of the sixth inning to score twice in the inning. The Patriots scored two runs on three hits in the inning. Parden escaped a bases loaded jam surrendering just the two runs, but Cumberlands tied the game, 2-2.

Neither team broke the tie in the seventh inning to push the game into extra innings. With the international tiebreaker rule in effect to start the 10th inning, the Patriots were able to capitalize and score a run to take a 3-2 lead over the Blue Raiders.

In the home half of the 10th inning, Kooker started out on second base for Lindsey Wilson. After the leadoff batter was retired, Fourman delivered a walk-off two-run home run to give the Blue Raiders a 4-3 victory.

Parden (19-3) pitched all 10 innings allowing two runs on eight hits, while striking out a season-high 15 batters.

Taryn Sigl (6-11) went 9-1/3 innings for Cumberlands allowing three runs on seven hits.

Lindsey Wilson now extends their winning streak to 20 games. The Blue Raiders secured the second-seed in the MSC Tournament as they sit at 21-3 in conference play. Campbellsville (Ky.) won the conference regular season title as they finished conference play with a record of 27-1.
