By Vicki Leibeck

When I was 12 years old, my family moved more than 800 miles cross country from Florida to Kentucky. After that move I felt very lost and out of place until the middle school guidance counselor approached me about something called "Academic Team."

Little did I know then that this ambiguous term would come to define my life. Academic Team became my supplement for school. I was so eager to learn and often I was not learning enough of what I wanted to learn in the classroom, so Academic Team became the place where I was able to explore and deepen my passion for and knowledge of all things literature, arts, and history. Thanks to Academic Team, it seems as if my time in high school flew by, punctuated by countless competitions, awards, life lessons, and friendships that have stood multiple tests of time and distance.

When I graduated from high school and entered college, I was afraid to articulate it at first, but when asked what I really wanted to major in and do with my life, the answer was simple: it was Academic Team. Unfortunately, there was no major for that, so I settled on the next best thing: English Education. As I continued my education, I continued my commitment to the Adair County High School Academic Team as an unofficial assistant coach. I would make the two hour drive on any given weekend to accompany the team to tournaments, officiate matches, and help in any way they would let me. If there was a choice to be made between helping the Academic Team or anything else, Academic Team won hands down.

Last year, I joined the staff at ACHS and became a more official assistant coach, after six years of volunteering my weekends, spring and winter breaks, and any spare moment I had. I have found no better way of serving the world and my community than educating its youth and helping students find where they can succeed and what their own interests are. I firmly believe in giving back when you have received, and it is with great love for seeing students learn, grow, and achieve that this is how I have chosen to give back to my community.

It is with the love of these students, the program we have built, and a commitment to a life-long love for learning that I now reach out to you and ask for your financial support. We are a small group with great talent and endless possibilities, and in the struggle to secure funding for our locally, state, nationally, and internationally recognized programs, we often come up short. Donations are always welcome from the community as we near the end of 2015-2016, and we are reaching out to those who have helped us in the past and welcome those that feel compelled to help us out for the first time. If you would like to assist in the day-to-day year-long efforts to keep our county's Academic Team success going, you can send donations to Adair County Academic Team, 526 Indian Dr, Columbia, KY 42728.

Our students are some of the most dedicated and hard working individuals around, and this program has produced alumni that have become the community and the world's educators, law enforcement officers, lawyers, doctors, clergy, scientists, geologists, military officers, computer software engineers, pharmacists, and so much more. If you want to know what dedication looks like, you can find it in one of our various practice locations, Monday through Thursday, from August to May, 2:45-4:45, and often well beyond the 4:45 mark. Your investment is not only an investment in today's students, but an investment that will serve to create meaningful learning opportunities for tomorrow's leaders.

Sincerely,
--Vicki Leibeck
