By Ed Waggener

Adair County Judge Executive Michael Lee Stephens gave the March 2016 report for the Green River Animal Shelter GRAS at Fiscal Court last night, Tuesday, April 12, 2016, for Kim Tucker, Director.

The shelter reported $2,330 in receipts, which includes $1,690.00 in adoption fees, $100 in surrender fees, donations of $10 and sponsorships of $530.00.

The total number of adoptions was 37 last month not including 14 sponsored dogs, for a total of 51 new homes for the animals.

Sponsorships occur when memorial gifts and gifts from animal lovers are made.

There were 27 animals taken in by Animal Control Officer Jimmy Harmon. There were 5 surrenders, and GRAS received five animals from Green County.

What a happy place. Green River Animal Shelter is having continued success, evident by all the Happy faces there. Kim Tucker, left, the Director, is holding Ava, her puppy. Tammy Campbell, right, is holding the new Top Dog and official mascot, center, and a new arrival, a black puppy, who may be available for adoption if a pending one is not confirmed. "Layla has won the hearts here at the shelter," Director Tucker says. "After coming in with a cracked pelvis and fluids on her hip, we nursed her back to health and in the mean time was winning our hearts with those sweet puppy eyes. So she is now officially the shelter MASCOT. She greets everyone coming and going with her wagging tail and beautiful face." Things couldn't be in better hands. - EW/LW

A portrait of Layla: Inner greatness recognized

2016-04-14 - Green River Animal Shelter, 455 Appleby Drive, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, CM photo.
It was a rare, quiet moment for Layla, the official mascot of Green River Animal Shelter during a rare lull in visitation at the shelter. Moments later, she greet us. Moments later, when the door was open, she went outside to show us how much she enjoys the wonderful lawn at the shelter's campus. And moments after this photo was taken she showing her maternal - maybe auntly - instincts as she played with two total adorable puppies and one lost Labtriever who was picked up in the Flatwoods area. We highly recommend you make her acquaintance. - ED & LINDA
