No. 7 Lindsey Wilson softball extends win streak to 16 games

Sweeps St. Catharine on Tuesday, 3-0 and 7-2
The Blue Raiders conclude their regular season home schedule this weekend as they host Cumberlands (KY) for a four-game series at Lindsey Wilson Park, 928 Russell Road, Columbia, KY, starting on Friday, April 15, 2016 at 3pmCT.

COLUMBIA, KY (12 Apr 2016) - The seventh-ranked Lindsey Wilson softball team picked up their 16th-straight victory after sweeping St. Catharine (Ky.) in a doubleheader at home on Tuesday, 3-0 and 7-2.

Sydney Fourman led the Blue Raiders (32-10, 17-3 Mid-South Conference) in the first game going 3-for-3 at the plate. Jenna Firestein paced the team in game two after going 3-for-4 at the dish with three runs and two RBIs. Cassie Kooker was a combined 3-for-5 over the two games with two runs and a pair of RBIs against the Patriots (21-27, 7-17 MSC).



Game 1 - Lindsey Wilson 3, St. Catharine 0

It was a slow start for both squads as the first three innings went by scoreless.

The tie was finally broken in the bottom of the fourth as Kooker started the inning with a single. Fourman followed two batters later with a single up the middle that went under the glove of the St. Catharine centerfielder and rolled all the way to the wall, allowing Kooker to score from second for the 1-0 lead.

The fifth inning went by scoreless before the Blue Raiders added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth.

After Kooker reached on a single to start the inning, Callum Pilgrim followed by reaching on an error, one of three errors committed by the Patriots. Fourman followed with a single to the infield after her hit landed and spun away from the charging shortstop to load the bases for Bailey Mize.

Mize then hit a ground ball to Patriot shortstop Aliyah Johnson, who fired home in an attempt to get the lead runner, but he throw sailed wide and allowed both Kooker and Pilgrim to score to make it 3-0. Lindsey Wilson nearly made it 4-0, but after a fly out to left for the second out, pinch runner Mackenzie Jackson was ruled to have left base early in an attempt to tag up on the fly out, and St. Catharine threw back to the base for the out to end the inning.

St. Catharine put one runner on base in the top of the seventh on a bloop single, but a groundout to the pitcher's mound and a strike out ended the game.

Starter Casey Bryan (14-6) went the distance, allowing just six hits with six strikeouts and one walk in her complete-game shutout.

St. Catharine's Tiffany Wickline (10-11) suffered the loss allowing three runs, just one earned, on six hits with three strikeouts.

Fourman accounted for half of Lindsey Wilson's hits with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate. Mize provided the lone RBI for the Blue Raiders. Taylor Lewis had two hits for the Patriots.

Game 2 - Lindsey Wilson 7, St. Catharine 2

St. Catharine put an end to a 15-inning scoreless streak held by Lindsey Wilson right out of the gate in game two after scoring once in the top of the first on a pair of doubles.

But the Blue Raiders had a quick response in the bottom half of the inning. Firestein opened with a leadoff triple and scored two batters later on a groundout by Pilgrim to make it 1-1.

St. Catharine took the lead right back in the top of the second as the first three batters of the inning reached base. A bunt single from Lynsie Clark gave the Patriots the 2-1 edge.

After being held scoreless in the second inning, Lindsey Wilson was able to tie the game once again in the third inning. Firestein reached on an error to start the inning and Kooker laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Firestein to second base. Pilgrim grounded out to shortstop, but Firestein advanced to third on the play. Fourman sent a single through the left side of the infield to score Firestein, which tied the game 1-1.

The Blue Raiders looked to take the lead, but they left runners on second and third base to end the third inning.

Lindsey Wilson grabbed their first lead of the game in the fourth inning as Firestein tripled to left field to score Amy Rogers, who reached on walk just before Firestein's plate appearance. Rogers and Firestein reached base with two outs in the inning.

In the sixth inning, the Blue Raiders looked to grab some insurance runs in the as they led by just one run. Amanda McIver started the inning with a single to shallow centerfield, and after the Blue Raiders first out of the inning, Morgan Howard sent a single through the left side of the infield to put runners on the corners with one out.

Rogers then delivered a one-out single to right field to score Brittany Graves -- who came in to pinch run for McIver -- from third base. The Lindsey Wilson rally continued as Firestein ripped a single through the left side of the infield to score Jackson -- who pinch ran for Howard.

After a wild pitch from the St. Catharine pitcher, Kooker singled to right-centerfield to score two more runs for the Blue Raiders. Lindsey Wilson looked to add on to their lead, but they left the bases loaded to end the sixth inning.

Lyndsey Parden closed the door on the Patriots as she allowed just one hit in the seventh inning to secure a 7-2 victory for Lindsey Wilson.

Parden (17-3) pitched all seven innings allowing just two runs on five hits, while posting 12 strikeouts.

Brittany McKee (3-2) suffered the loss for St. Catharine after she pitched five and 1/3 innings allowing seven runs -- six earned -- on nine hits.

After the results from Tuesday, Lindsey Wilson remains in second place in the Mid-South Conference standings with a record of 17-3. Campbellsville (Ky.) leads the conference at 23-1.
