Gov. Matt Bevin's Communications Office FRANKFORT, KY (Tue 12 Apr 2016) - Governor Matt Bevin today announced the appointment of Greg Thomas as Secretary of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC). Thomas was appointed Deputy Secretary in February 2016 and has been serving as Acting Secretary since March 2016. "Greg possesses the leadership and management qualifications that are imperative for the Transportation Cabinet in these tough budgetary times," said Governor Bevin. "His expertise in engineering and budget management, coupled with his ability to provide strategic direction, make him the perfect fit for this critical position within the administration." "I am truly honored to serve Kentucky as Secretary of the Transportation Cabinet," said Secretary Thomas. "As we move forward, we will continue our commitment to providing a safe and reliable transportation network for Kentucky. I want to sincerely thank Governor Bevin for the opportunity to serve the Cabinet, our talented employees and the citizens of the Commonwealth." Sec. Thomas's entry into state government comes at a time when the Cabinet is facing numerous funding challenges due, in part, to a shortfall in motor fuels tax receipts and an increased spending on maintenance and state construction projects. Under his leadership, Thomas vows to implement cost-saving measures that will restore the Road Fund cash balance back to normal operating levels. Having spent most of his career in Lexington and Louisville, Thomas most recently served as Vice President of Electric Distribution for LG&E and KU Energy LLC in Louisville. There, he led and directed all statewide electric distribution operations and provided oversight for more than 700 employees and 1,000 contractors delivering quality electric service to 943,000 customers. Thomas also set the strategic direction for electric distribution operations, including investment planning, budgeting and prudent management of a $250 million operating and capital annual budget. Thomas received a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Tennessee. Thomas and his wife, LuAnn, live in Louisville. They have two children.
