LWC Tennis tops Indiana Wesleyan

By Chris Wells

No. 7-ranked Lindsey Wilson men's tennis topped Indiana Wesleyan 6-0 Saturday at the Kelly Hall Tennis Complex on the Campbellsville (Ky.) campus. The No. 3-ranked women's tennis team remained perfect against NAIA competition this season with a 5-2 win over the No. 9-ranked Indiana Wesleyan women's team.

In men's play, the Blue Raiders (10-3) jumped out to a commanding lead, capturing all three doubles points.

Denis Porcic and Raul Mendez -- ranked No. 7 in NAIA doubles -- won their seventh straight match in the top-seeded doubles match to give Lindsey Wilson a 1-0 lead. The Blue Raider tandem cruised to an 8-1 win over Leonard Mathews and Brandon Dubuque to improve to 7-2 this season.

Tomas Deppiagio and Javier Raya doubled the Blue Raider lead in the third-seeded match with an 8-3 win over Austin Christner and Caleb Cottrell. Ignacio Huertas and Alonso Tellez made it a clean sweep in doubles with an 8-6 win over Tyler Abbott and Daniel Smith in the No. 2-seeded match.

Needing just two points to clinch the team match, the Blue Raiders won three singles matches before the remainder of the matches were stopped.

No. 29-ranked Mendez dropped just three games in a 6-2, 6-1 win over Brandon Dubuque in the second-seeded singles match for a 4-0 lead.

Raya and Huertas each finished their matches simultaneously to give the Blue Raiders the 6-0 win.

Raya beat Andrew Block 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 6 match while Huertas got the best of Christner 6-3, 6-3 in the fourth-seeded match.

Indiana Wesleyan -- who is receiving voting points in the top-25 poll -- drops to 10-7 on the season with the loss.

In women's play, the Blue Raiders (10-4) captured two of the three doubles points and claimed three of the four singles matches that concluded to win the top-10 battle. The rest of the matches were halted after the Blue Raiders reached the necessary five points to claim the win.

Lindsey Wilson jumped out to a 1-0 lead over the Wildcats thanks to Alex Shchipakina and Maria Prados' 8-3 win over Kelsey Vessels and Ellen Hornett in the third-seeded match. The tandem remained perfect on the season, improving to 6-0 with the win.

Indiana Wesleyan (23-5) evened the match with a win at the top-seeded doubles match. Katie Wilson and Lucia Solis -- the NAIA's top-ranked doubles team -- upended Natalia Kattah and Henar Munoz 8-5 for the win.

Jessica King and Fiona Curty put the Blue Raiders back in front with an 8-6 win over Rachel Bottorff and Alex Mella in the second-seeded match. The win helped Lindsey Wilson take a 2-1 lead into singles play.

Shchipakina extended the Lindsey Wilson lead to 3-1 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Solis in the second-seeded singles match. Shchipakina improves to 6-1 on the season with win.

The Wildcats bounced back with a win at the third-seeded match. Bottorff (IWU) defeated Kattah 6-1, 6-3 to trim the team deficit to 3-2.

Lindsey Wilson won the next two matches to take the team win.

Munoz blanked Wilson -- ranked 35th in the NAIA in singles -- in the third set to take a 6-3, 2-6, 6-0 win in the top-seeded singles match. The win moved the Blue Raiders within a point of the team win.

Prados provided that win with a decisive 6-0, 6-3 over Marissa Klein in the sixth-seeded match. The win is Prados' team-leading seventh straight victory in singles play.

King and Curty each owned a one-set lead when the matches were stopped.
