Personal commentary

My husband Mark and I have lived all over the country. Mark served in the USN for over 30 years, then we decided to retire in Adair Co. We both love it here - the land is beautiful, the people are friendly and helpful. But I'm amazed and saddened by the ignorance exhibited by some people on the No side. Especially the folks defending the "protect our children from alcohol" idea.

I've never lived in a dry county, and frankly, since prohibition ended over 80 yrs. ago, didn't realize any such places still exist.

Educating your children to make responsible choices about alcohol (and drugs) is simple common sense. In my opinion it has nothing to do with religion, and everything to do with responsible parenting. Besides alcohol is, and has been, readily available in Adair Co. for anyone of any age who illegally buys from one of the local bootleggers.

I'm not a big alcohol drinker, but occasionally have a glass of wine or a mixed drink with meals. Sometimes I'll pick up a 6 pack of beer while grocery shopping. I'd much rather be spending that money locally, instead of driving to Somerset, Danville, or some other town.

Granted, Adair County won't be adding much to its income from alcohol tax generated by my small purchases. But, it's a proven fact that legal alcohol sales bring in tax revenue, and that revenue stays local.

I'll be voting Yes to legal alcohol sales. - Anita Rees
