Adair Co. will apply for full Work Ready Community status

All qualifications are now met

By Ellen Zornes, Chair
Columbia/Adair County Work Ready Community Committee

The Work Ready Community application committee met Monday, February 22, in the Chamber of Commerce Board Room. Darryl McGaha, LCADD Workforce Investment Board Coordinator, delivered wonderful news to the group. Adair County has now met the qualifications to apply for full Work Ready Community status.

We currently hold the Work Ready Community in Progress designation so being able to move up is a major accomplishment. The Work Ready Community designation is necessary for our community to even be considered as a location by new industry.

A crucial area of this designation is that our high school graduates will be certified as "work ready." This is part of the "national career readiness certificate" program and includes attendance, classes taken, test scores, dual credits, graduation rate, etc.

The area of "soft skills" that include competence in attendance and punctuality, being able to communicate with others, teamwork, leadership skills and critical thinking is also paramount in attaining this designation. These skills are currently being taught and reinforced in our schools and through the adult learning center.

Another component is the indicator of digital literacy that involves our entire county's availability and speed of internet as well as the number of residents who have access to it.

The Work Ready Community application committee is a joint effort of community leaders from our business, educational (school district, LWC and adult learning) and community at large settings.
