Click on headlline for complete story By Jordan Alves, sports information director CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY (Sun 21 Feb 2016) - One week after Campbellsville University announced the addition of men's volleyball as the 28th varsity program, director of athletics Rusty Hollingsworth has found himself a coach. Fifteen-year coaching veteran Billy Gregory will be the program's first head coach. "I am pleased to announced that Billy Gregory will assume the role of head coach of our new men's volleyball program," said Hollingsworth. "Coach Gregory has a long history of coaching at CU and I know he will continue the tradition of recruiting great athletes that fit the mission of Campbellsville University." Gregory returned to Campbellsville University as a volunteer assistant volleyball coach in 2010 for the women's program. In 2015-16, he completed his 6th season coaching with Amy Eckenfels Zink, whom he recruited and coached during his second stint as CU's head coach in 2002-04. He was also head coach during the 1994 season after being the assistant coach in the programs 1993 inaugural season. Overall, Gregory has been a part of 333 wins at Campbellsville. As an assistant coach, he has 255 wins in 10 seasons and won 78 matches in four seasons as the head coach (1994, 2002-2004). Gregory has 25 years of playing experience and 15 years of collegiate and high school coaching experience. He is a former Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year at Campbellsville University and was named the 2013 NCCAA Assistant Coach of the Year. During his tenure with CU, he has coached multiple All-Americans, the NAIA National Libero of the Year (Eckenfels), the NCCAA Player of the Year as well as a former Olympian, the late Doris Wefwafwa. He is a Senior Trooper with the Kentucky State Police and currently serves as Public Affairs Officer. He has been with the State Police since 1996 and was a detective from 2001-04. "Having been part of the women's program since its inception, I have a tremendous amount of pride in what has been accomplished," said Gregory. "I look forward to the new and different challenges of men's volleyball by laying the foundation of hard work, high character, desire and passion for the game." "Billy's leadership skills and attention to detail will help him build a strong program," said Hollingsworth. "We all look forward to watching this exciting sport as we will first compete in the spring of 2017." Campbellsville joins 32 other teams representing men's volleyball at the NAIA level with Briar Cliff (Iowa) as the last university to launch the sport in November. CU is also the lone university in the Commonwealth and member of the Mid-South Conference to offer the sport. Campbellsville has two of the four current NAIA emerging sports programs - bowling and competitive cheerleading. Bowling was the most recent of those added, starting in August 2009. The other two NAIA emerging sports programs are rowing and women's field hockey. Lacrosse has been moved from an emerging sport the previous two seasons to an invitational sport. The Tigers are expected to carry 12-15 student-athletes and recruiting has already started for Gregory. "Men's volleyball is still relatively young so there simply are not a lot of opportunities for young men to pursue at the collegiate level," said Gregory. "I am thankful that the administration has decided to offer another tool to help student-athletes pursue their goals and dreams on and off the court." This past summer, Campbellsville announced the addition of a new wrestling facility, therefore making Gosser Gymnasium the full-time volleyball facility for men's and women's volleyball and cheerleading.
