LWC Softball splits doubleheader with Union on Saturday

By Charlie Balcom

Barbourville, KY - Missed opportunities by the Lindsey Wilson softball team led to a doubleheader split with Union (Ky.) on Saturday.

The Bulldogs (3-1) took the opener over the No. 2-ranked Blue Raiders (3-3) 2-1 in eight innings, but Lindsey Wilson bounced back with a 9-1 win in a five-inning contest in the second game to salvage the split.

GAME 1

Missed opportunities haunted the Blue Raiders all game long as the Bulldogs won 2-1 on a walk-off base hit in the bottom of the eighth inning to start the doubleheader. Lindsey Wilson left 11 runners stranded on base in the loss and failed to take advantage of the six walks they were issued.

Callum Pilgrim led off the game with a single, stole second, and then moved to third on a groundout. After Bailey Mize walked, Amanda McIver lined a ball straight to the Bulldog second baseman, who then doubled off Mize at first to end the inning, leaving Pilgrim stranded at third.

The Blue Raiders were the first team to dent the scoreboard in the second as Sydney Fourman was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a wild pitch. After a 13-pitch at bat, Abbi Goedde drew a walk and Morgan Howard followed with a single to left-center to score Fourman. Brittney Graves then drew a walk to load the bases with one out, but Pilgrim struck out and Jenna Firestein popped out to end the inning, stranding another three Blue Raiders.

After retiring the first six batters of the game, starting Blue Raider pitcher Lyndsey Parden got into a little bit of trouble in the bottom of the third. The Bulldogs had bases loaded after a pair of singles and a walk with two outs, but she got out of the jam on a strikeout to preserve the 1-0 lead.

Both teams were retired in order in the fourth.

The Blue Raiders once again were in a scoring situation in the fifth as they had runners on second and third with one out, but a pop out and line out left Lindsey Wilson empty on the scoring chance.

Union finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth, taking advantage of a costly Blue Raider error. Parden struck out the first Bulldog, but the next batter reached on a missed pop up to the infield. Following a single, the next batter hit into a fielder's choice which should have ended the inning if not for the error. Union then took advantage of the extended inning and singled to load the bases, followed by another single to score one and tie the game at 1-1. Parden was able to limit the damage and get a strikeout to end the jam.

Just one combined base runner reached for the teams in the seventh as the game went into extras tied at 1-1.

Once again the missed opportunities were costly for Lindsey Wilson in the eighth inning. Amanda McIver started on second due to the international tiebreaker rule, and moved to third after Cassie Kooker reached on a fielder's choice. But two strikeouts and a pop out later, the inning was over and the Blue Raiders had failed yet again to push a run across.

This time around, Union was able to take full advantage in the bottom half of the inning as the Bulldog runner on second moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Parden got the second out on a pop out, but could not get the final one as Tiffanie Moore singled to left-center to score the game-winning run from third in a walk-off 2-1 win over the Blue Raiders.

Lindsey Wilson managed just four hits in the loss while stranding the 11 runners. Pilgrim and Howard combined for all four Blue Raider hits.

Parden (1-1) suffered the loss giving up two runs, one earned, on seven hits with seven strikeouts in a complete-game effort. Union's Megan Baldwin took the win giving up one earned run on four hits with eight strikeouts.

GAME 2

The second game saw the Blue Raiders score five runs in the fifth inning to put an early end to the contest in the 9-1 victory.

Lindsey Wilson seemed to have the same scoring issues to start the second contest in the top of the first. Pilgrim was caught stealing third, and just one batter later Mize doubled but was unable to score from second.

Union took the lead in bottom of the frame on a solo home run, but that would be all starting pitcher Casey Bryan would allow as she gave up just one more hit in the game, striking out the next three Union batters to end the frame.

Fourman responded for the Blue Raiders with a solo home run of her own in the top of the second to level the score.

Union got their second and final hit to start the bottom of the second before Bryan picked up two more strikeouts to end the inning.

The Blue Raiders righted their scoring woes in the third after extending their lead to 3-1 after Mize singled to center to score Pilgrim and Kooker bunt singled to score Firestein. Lindsey Wilson added one more run in the fourth on a double, single, and a Union throwing error.

Lindsey Wilson then exploded for five runs in the top of the fifth, all with two outs. Four-straight singles by Graves, Goedde, Mackenzie Jackson and Pilgrim capped off by a double from Firestein made it a 9-1 ball game.

Union got one more base runner in the bottom of the fifth, but Bryan got a groundout to end the game and salvage the split in the two-game series.

Bryan (2-1) allowed one run on two hits with six strikeouts without issuing a walk in her complete-game effort

Unions Hannah Wakeman took the loss allowing three earned runs on eight hits in four innings.

Pilgrim went a perfect 4-for-4 in game two at the plate, while Mize and Jackson each had two hits.
