Cayce Davenport: Act today to halt KY SB 1 assault on arts The Arts & Social Studies are being jeopardized. In our area, contact: Senator David Givens: 502-563-3120 and Senator Max Wise: 502-564 8100 ext 673, today to express your support for the arts, to voice your opposition to Senate Bill 1 now be rushed to passage. - CASSIE DAVENPORT By Cassie Davenport Personal commentary The validity of arts and social studies programs of Kentucky are in danger today. Senate Bill 1 is the most recent attempt in school reform proposed by legislators. Senate Bill 1 emerged from committee last Thursday and has been expedited for final vote TODAY! This is much too soon for a bill of this magnitude to be passed. The language regarding the removal of the humanities and social studies in school accountability has not been changed. The Ky Coalition for the Arts Education nor the Ky Arts Council has not had a chance to propose changes or a compromise. Those organizations have been working with the Kentucky Music Educator’s Association (KMEA) and the Kentucky Art Educator’s Association (KyAEA) to ensure the survival and continuing thriving of the arts areas. The bill also removes Social Studies testing from school accountability. This is too soon for this bill to go for final vote. Proposals for changes from affected constituents have not had time to be made. Contact your local senator TODAY! Tell them to halt the approval of this bill until a better support for the Arts and Social Studies content can be clearly outlined. This story was posted on 2016-02-17 12:50:40
