CMS students advance to state academic team competition By Calen McKinney Campbellsville Middle School academic team competed at regional Governor's Cup on Tuesday, Feb. 9, and Saturday, Feb. 13, and, as a result of their high scores, several students will advance to the state competition. At Governor's Cup competitions, teams compete in on-demand writing, quick recall, future problem solving and five written exams, including math, science, social studies, language arts and arts and humanities. The CMS future problem solving team, made up of eighth-graders Savanna Brockman and Cole Kidwell and seventh-graders John Orberson and Abi Wiedewitsch, received second place at region competition, out of eight groups competing. Ben Arachi, an eighth-grader, placed second in the science exam. Overall, CMS placed seventh out of the 16 teams competing. The FPS team and Arachi will compete at state competition on March 19-21 at the Galt House in Louisville. This is the first time in about 20 years the school's FPS team will compete at the state competition. In its district, Campbellsville Middle School competes against Adair, Green and Taylor counties. At regional competition, CMS competed against Adair, Green, Taylor, Clinton, Cumberland, Metcalfe, Monroe, Casey, Russell and Wayne counties, Somerset Christian School, Meece Middle School, Northern Middle School, Science Hill Elementary School and Southern Middle School. At state competition, CMS will compete against all the other middle grade teams in Kentucky who advanced from their region competitions. Debbie Edwards and Steven Gumm co-sponsor the CMS academic team, which is made up of sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders. This story was posted on 2016-02-17 05:44:48
