Gas Metal Arc Welding Class to be offered in Adair County For adult learners. Classes, in partnership with Adair County Schools, starts Monday, March 14, 2016 at Adair County High School. SUPT ALAN W. REED writes: "Our partnership between Adair County Schools and Somerset Community College represents an important milestone in workforce development for Adair and surrounding counties. The class, held on the campus of Adair County Schools, will produce immediate returns for adults across our county and region who have a desire to learn a high demand welding trade featuring robotics. This first class for adults will also set the stage for full, two-year degree programs in high paying technical degrees through the KCTCS system and Somerset Community College through a partnership with Adair County Schools." Click on headline for complete story By Allison Horseman, Somerset Community College SOMERSET, KY (Tue 9 Feb 2016 - The Workforce Solutions Department at Somerset Community College, in partnership with Adair County Schools and the Lake Cumberland Area Development District, will be offering a Gas Metal Arc Welding class for adult learners starting Monday, March 14 through Friday May 6, 2016. This class is the first of five classes that will lead to the Gas Metal Arc Welding Certificate offered by Somerset Community College. This class teaches students the practical application and manipulative skills of Gas Metal Arc Welding and the proper safety situations needed in this process. Both ferrous and non-ferrous metals will be covered, as well as various joint designs on plate in all positions. Students also learn about the identification, inspection, and maintenance of GMAW machines; the identification, selection, and storage of GMAW electrodes; and the principles of GMAW and the effects of variables on the GMAW process. Class will begin Monday night, March 14 and will meet every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights from 5pmCT to 8pmCT for eight weeks. The course instructors are Karl Watson, Associate Professor of welding at Somerset Community College, and Scott Stringer, Instructional Specialist of welding at Somerset Community College. The classes will be held at the Adair County Vocational Agriculture Shop adjacent to the new satellite welding facility located behind Adair County High School. Upon successful completion of this class, students will receive the Welder Helper Certificate from Somerset Community College. The cost for the class is $775.00. Students will be responsible for providing their own welding protective equipment (welding gloves, clear and shaded safety glasses, welding helmet with shade #10 lens, welding jacket, and boots) and equipment (tape measure 6ft minimum, wire brush, vise grip clamp, pliers) and purchasing a textbook. All students will be required to complete the Somerset Community College admissions application, submit high school and any college transcripts, and ACT or COMPASS test scores. Students may contact the Lake Cumberland Area Development District to see if they qualify for possible financial assistance with the tuition and books.
