LWC's Matt Walker named MSC Wrestler of the Week Third Blue Raider men's wrestling team member to earn the weekly award, joining teammates Jake Maupin and Brady Moser Click on headline for complete story By Charles Balcom COLUMBIA, KY (Mon 8 Feb 2016) - Lindsey Wilson junior Matt Walker has been selected as the Mid-South Conference Wrestler of the Week, conference officials announced on Monday. Walker posted a 5-1 record during the week, winning a pair of dual matches and going 3-1 at the Greyhound Open in Indianapolis en route to a runner-up finish in the 184-pound bracket. The Hilliard, Ohio native opened the week with two dual match wins in Lindsey Wilson's victories over MSC West Division opponents Cumberland (TN) and Cumberlands (KY) on Wednesday night. Walker took down Cumberland's Kyle Delaune, who finished fourth at the 2015 NAIA National Championships last season and currently ranks No. 16 at 174 pounds in the NAIA, with a 9-4 decision to grab three points towards the Blue Raiders' team score. In the nightcap against Cumberlands, Walker, who ranks No. 13 at 174 pounds, bumped up to the 184-pound class and made quick work of Eddie Bernal with an 18-2 technical fall that ended the match in the second period. Lindsey Wilson went on to beat the Phoenix 24-10 and the Patriots 32-3 to move to 3-0 in the MSC West. On Saturday, Walker once again wrestled up a class as he competed in the 184-pound bracket at the Greyhound Open. Walker opened the tournament by pinning Cumberlands' Brian Mahadeo in one minute and 20 seconds. Walker then followed with a pair of wins over NCAA Division I opponents, first topping SIU-Edwardsville's (IL) Jake Godinez in a 15-2 major decision and then edging out Indiana's Nate Conley in overtime TB-1 10-5 to advance to the bracket finals. In the finals, Walker suffered his lone loss of the week in a tight 4-2 decision to Indiana Tech's LJ Grayson, who ranks No. 2 at 184 pounds. Walker improved to 12-3 on the season and holds a perfect 6-0 mark in dual competitions. He becomes the third different Blue Raider to earn the conference weekly award, joining teammates Jake Maupin and Brady Moser. This story was posted on 2016-02-09 07:11:16
